I tell you one thing, when you see goldies from 70s (which are basically the trend setters and pioneer of a certain genre) you gotta see them as they were, ORIGINAL. The movies in 80s, 90s and 00s are mostly based on those standards that were set in 70s.
That is why when we see the goldies from that era, we can predict the next scene, move or even dialogue, because it has been copied over gizzillions of times in the later movies that nothing looks more surprising.
So for the viewers of 70s which were the targeted market, those movies were more than what Rang De Basanti or Sarkar is for us.
Both old Don and new Don are good in their own times.
