ok.
A person electrocuted by accident, or a person killed by electric chair both died with same thing.
Yet one is accident one is punishment.
Same way dinosaur killed by big stone,could be accident.
And one tribe A going under mountain pass, killed by stones could be either a punishment or an accident. Being there at precise time when stones were going to fall. (lets take that case for simplicity rather then some one shaking stones in real time)

The way we can confirm if it was indeed a punishment, if some one was warn before hand.
We were told this was the case.
NOW to prove or disprove, we need to find if people were saved or not.
IF saved ---- then punishment.
IF not saved— accident.
This whole thing bring our story as an equation to check out.
With one thing leaving out… which both of us can not prove or disprove.
BTW OP did not site a source so I am only discussing idea of punishment in ancient times.
