Do you backup your data?

Re: Do you backup your data?

Laptop #1 - Work
Laptop #2 - Home
Laptop #3 - Go around

4TB x 2 Backup
2TB x 6 Backup
500GB x 2 Portable
4TB x1 Network Drive

I throw everything onto the network drive where at different times, I move stuff onto the main 4TB drives. The only way you can really be careful is to keep backing up onto atleast 2-3 drives at regular intervals and pray they don’t go belly up at once. There’s not much else you can do really unless you want to buy a LOT of flash disks.

Re: Do you backup your data?

That’s why I’ve given up on keeping backups on external drives and use Dropbox for everything. Since it syns with all the computers I use, I pretty much have my data replicated on multiple computers including home and work, as well as have the data in the cloud in case any of my own systems gives up on me. Besides, it’s all seamless once you setup your folders for the first time - so there’s no additional backup process required.

Re: Do you backup your data?

ok but drop box has 2 gb limit unless you pay extra, its not really enough for me, you have more than 2 gb?

Re: Do you backup your data?

yep… I have the 50GB account… which is ample for my important documents including work and personal files - like I said, for $100 per year, the convenience of synced files across work and home computer HDs + online backup + the seamlessness of the solution is well worth it.

Re: Do you backup your data?

If you want something like dropbox without a limit of space. use windows live Mesh. It work from PC to PC, PC to MAC, Mac to mac.

Live mesh won’t store something online. only 5GB using skydrive. But its really usefull free alternative to Dropbox / mobileMe.

Re: Do you backup your data?

Ok that makes sense. Although your options are still digital storage but going for Iron Mountain kind of hard copy backup option would be stretching it too much I guess.

Re: Do you backup your data?

What I advise clients:
Have 3 copies of data.

  1. Production
  2. A copy on either external drive or NAS
  3. Have an offsite copy

LC’s setup covers all 3 steps. Another way would be to run a script every night to back up to a NAS and then subscribe to cloud backup using Carbonite or Mozy. Both charge around $55-60 a year for unlimited local data.
