Re: Do we have ability to appreciate....
I always appreciated South Indians for their patience to stand and follow in queue. Unthinkable in Delhi except at Metro :)

They speak one by one, not answering to each other but to Mr Speaker. and when answers are finished, " I give way to the gentleman at the back" sort of politeness.
On the other hand, Ideas of bravery, courage, martial capability etc are qualities that are needed during war times not in day to day working of civilization and are considered great qualities only in tribal society
Re: Do we have ability to appreciate....
I do...like in balochi as far as i know the wedding is paid from groom side no burden at bride's family..i highly appreciate it.. .
Same custom is followed by Pashtuns, wedding is paid from groom side. Many traditions and values of Balochs and Pashtuns are very similar, i think its because both are tribal nations.
On topic: I like Sophistication of farsiwans and Iranians. Pride and nationalism of Balochs. Humour of Punjabis. Fearlessness of Uzbeks. Humility in Bengalis.

^ thank you :p
i appreciate the sub-continent culture of taking care of our parents and siblings, especially in rural areas. it's on the decline, unfortunately, though. i hope we'll not fall victim to the nuclear family culture.

Actually when it comes to Hindustani people, they act good as community as people but never as family.
I mean there is too much jealousy among relatives and once a woman is without husband even close relatives turn upon her and her family. Such thing can never be found in us Sardars, we support each other too much only thing is we don't have sophistication of civility of Hindustani people

baat toh ek had tak sahi ki aapne. Once a Sikh family was my neighbour in MP. They planned to start their own school, took loan from people and suffered financial crises. Those days elder son was doing electric inverter making business. The Sikh community helped him making customers and assisted younger son in opening a mobile shop. I don't know it happens in Punjab or not.

This happen in Punjab, suppose a guy needs to buy a truck, he will take load of Rs 50000 from 10 people in village and will return it one by one. You can never see such unity in Hindustani people ever.

I don't know much about Afghanistan. But under the Taliban regime, on TV, some women were shown reduced to beggar status. So maybe the rule does not apply to bandis?
Also, I am not sure a beggar is one out of choice. Children are kidnapped and turned to beggars so that their kidnappers can live off them. If the children happen to be of Pathan origin...

Re: Do we have ability to appreciate....
I can't recall all the times that I have appreciated (whether silently or otherwise) aspects of other people's cultures...but I do know that I have done so.
If people are able to find faults within their own culture, then yes they do also have the ability to appreciate things in other people's cultures.

Re: Do we have ability to appreciate…
That is two times. They are very frugal by nature.
It is like gujratis here who buy cars and houses on cash but won’t buy perfume, wash clothes w/o detergent (at least many do..) and bring masalas back from india in their suitcases.
It cracks me up when I have seen in some pakistani dramas on how they portray indians in the US. Intihai pagal qaum hay hamari.
Re: Do we have ability to appreciate....
Culture of others?
I mean appreciating certain aspects (language, arts, music, poetry, folklore, lifestyle, characteristics like bravery, hospitality, etc).
How often do you express such feelings for the people who belong to different culture than yours?
I work with the public and I have observed that eastern people very seldom show appreciation for or compliment people. They seem to be wanting a pound of flesh and no matter how much out of the way you go for them they will say that you didn't do enough. I go to this Punjabi restaurant and often see patrons getting very bossy with the girls there and not leaving a tip, although the service is always great and food is dirt cheap and delicious. I went to a PUMA outlet that was exclusively manned by desi girls and most clients were immigrants. I complimented them on their great service and the manager told me that noone has ever complimented them before.
Re: Do we have ability to appreciate....
But then when we typecast a community isn't that bigotry and prejudice. My memon millionaire friend was the most generous person I have met in my life, I have met scores of Pashtuns who are not brave and I have seen many brave Bengalis, Gen Niazi used to ridicule them and then they showed their courage and tenacity. I have seen very sophisticated Pashtuns. We should really not generalize and look at each individual and appreciate and compliment them for their positive attributes...like hey you don't sweat much for a fat person...lol
