Re: Do Desis DIY?
Fraudia, define "season", pls.
I am thinking of painting some rooms. Doing it myself is definitely an option, as its neither complicated nor are they very large/high walls. But will definitely take some quotations, just for info and comparison sake.
Re: Do Desis DIY?
I think winter will/can be considered as an off season....
Re: Do Desis DIY?
I don't know if there would be an "off season" where the climate is always favourable.

Painting walls is back breaking work. You'd think that your arms can move that brush, roller back-and-forth back-and-forth very easily but it's not. You'll discover muscles in your arm, shoulders and back that you never knew existed. :D
Re: Do Desis DIY?
I am a lot into DIY…and now seeing all the others around me hire a contractor and have the things "proffessionally " done.(ofcourse the end result is better).I dont wanna do the big jobs anymore
..My husband doesnt even DIY the grass cutting
…so now I wanted the kitckhen cabinets repainted …and I am going to go with a Proffesional!!!..and one other funny thing is my husband had the front door redone, while I was in Pakistan. It was previously done by me, and it was a fancy back breaking work with the trillion coats of wat not and the sanding…He got it done only for 60 bucks…60 bucks…I 'm like thats it…no more DIY for me
…only the smaller stuff from now on…Im in the mood of painting one room buttery yellow…or lilac…
…

Re: Do Desis DIY?
Faisal, well seasons for you bay area folks are a little different. In Chicago you have a lot of work like room additions, sun rooms, pools, patios, etc going on in late spring to early fall.
people do not want to pay for decks and patios in fall because they will not enjoy it, but the landscape folks are out of work then, many go into snow removal and all during winter but the late fall period is very low for them, they will give you a huge break.
now, again from a chicago perspective..people do painting and stuff in spring and summer, early fall because they can open windows and vent the paint fumes, not so in winter ..although u can technically close off a room and let it vent for a few days and you should be more than fine.
winter is a very very very slow time for contractors, use em then.
Re: Do Desis DIY?
Faisal, we had teh kids rooms and their bathroom painted in spring, whch was not an of season, and we paid $250 for the three rooms, we had to buy the paint separately. rooms are small though I think 12X12 and 12X13. larger rooms would be more expensive.
This was a case where I did not use my regular contractor because he was like twice as expensive.
Re: Do Desis DIY?
I believe its because we all read chacha chakan nay tasvir tangi at an early age and it left us scarred.
Re: Do Desis DIY?
I need to paint wall that goes up with the staircase. I have not got time to look for the decor and my family will not allow me to paint it until I get all decors and spot lights.
Question: On the side wall of the staircase, which is sometimes used while coming down inspite of having siderail on the left side of the stairs, which paint is more durable. Last time I had Satin done on it, which is very durable and washable as well, but when moving furniture sometimes it does get scratches. Then patching up Satin is not an easy job if you compare it with eggshell or other non-latex grades. What is the best paint for staircase in your opinion.
Re: Do Desis DIY?
you can always do some wainscot, may or may not work with your home and decor.
I would say if u balance ease with aesthetics go with eggshell.
Re: Do Desis DIY?
Yeah wainscot will not work with my contemporary IKEA themes.
I will try eggshell on staircase.
What about Wainscotting powder room? Is it too country, Amercian, formal? or should I go with my own theme on the upper walls above the wainscot? What about contrast wall paper in powder room. Like lower half of the wall with dark wallpaper and upper with its light contrast, divded by a wooden trim at waist high?
Re: Do Desis DIY?
wainscot is not always traditional. it can be formal, country or cotemporary based on color and material choices. I saw this zebrawood, stainless steel and frosted glass wainscot at a loft in Chicago that blew my mind, but it was prolly worth a few bucks ya know.
Re: Do Desis DIY?
I did lots of work DIY, some by choice and some by economic force ![]()
By choice, I installed exhaust system in kitchen, by default the one which was installed already was the one which throws cooking fumes/vapors on you
so I put in the system to throw the cooking vapors/fumes etc. outside the wall. It was one tough job, but now that it is finished I am sorta proud of it as it is done very neatly .
By economic force, I re-finished kitchen cabinets … took veeeeeery long time from start to finish, though some cabinets are still not touched and I have all sorts of shades of golden pecan/natural oak etc. but anyone whom I showed couldn’t tell from first look unless I told them and explained the differences :k: . Went through lots of learning and experience, the most important was to not trust what the Home Depot guy tells you!
Re: Do Desis DIY?
Question for painter baboo (Fraudia :D): Dry wall is painted with antique white, I think "latex" is used, what type of paint goes on moldings and doors? That is of same color but with some shine/gloss on it ... Is it semi-gloss??
Re: Do Desis DIY?
you want some contrast for the trim to stand out. use a bright white semigloss.
btw impressed with your handywork, I moved the damn microhood out it in the breakfast room and put a vent hood, pretty kewl thing, its stainless and glass, while this was being done, it just seemed right to put a mosaic backsplash and glas tiles on the wall. but again had the contractor guy do all that.
I am more of an idea guy, have an entire notebook of drawing ranging from landscaping to other things. even took a stab at changing the floorplan from the original drawings the builder has shared.
hanging closet systems and that kinda shyt I do easily but bigger projects I am still wary of, just never had teh time to do justice to them so never really tried
Re: Do Desis DIY?
