Disappointment for Pakistan in Asian Games

Re: Disappointment for Pakistan in Asian Games

as somone said, why pin all hopes on hockey and win one medal, dealing with the dynamics of the team, selection, team mates clicking and finding a groove

we need more investment in individual sports as well.

just remember, one olympic swimmer won more dold medals in one year than pakistan had won in over a decade.

makes u think

Re: Disappointment for Pakistan in Asian Games

lack of interest, lack of motivation, the channeling of youth into politics etc also had a huge impact.

we dont have an appreciation of sports in the country in general. facilities are an issue, but facilitis are an issue in many other countries.

yes you need training grounds, but they dont have to be state of the art stadiums for track and field and even for soccer, atleast at grassroots levels.

the talent is there, look at how music took off..sports can take off the same way, but you have to motivate people, you have to show them that it matters.

Today Pakistan beat Japan 4-2 to take Bronze. Korea beat China 3-1 to take Gold.
By getting the bronze medal, Pakistan booked a place in the 2008 Beijing Olympics
What a disappointing Asian games for Pakistan one silver and a couple of bronze medals.

Pakistan game needs major surgery, says chief
KARACHI: Pakistan hockey needs a radical overhaul if it is to move forward from its latest debacle at the Asian Games in Doha, a senior Pakistan Hockey Federation official said on Thursday. Pakistan lost for the first time to China in the semi-finals of the Asian Games hockey competition and have not won a major international title since 1994. Malaysian hockey coach Nur Azmi has also accused Pakistan of fixing a match with Japan, which ended in a goaless draw and kept his team out of the semi-finals. “The truth is Pakistan hockey needs radical surgery. This is the best lot we have,” PHF secretary Akhtarul Islam told Reuters. Pakistan won Olympic gold in 1960, ‘68 and ‘84 but have not taken a hockey title since winning the Champions Trophy and World Cup in 1994. “We are now going to announce a new team management before our bilateral series against India in March-April, 2007,” Islam said. “We might not go for a foreign coach but certainly we will appoint a foreign trainer and physiotherapist,” the PHF official said, adding that they believed many of their problems came from fitness concerns about playing on artificial playing surfaces. Pakistan, whose last two major titles came under Dutch coach Hans Jorritsma, overlooked five of their top players for the Games after they snubbed a training camp to play European league hockey. Islam said the PHF would not panic and turn to senior players. “Even when they were playing we won nothing of importance in the last few years so it is best we move on and prepare a team under a new management for 2008 Olympics,” he added. reuters

Re: Disappointment for Pakistan in Asian Games

The bigger issue is the state of athletics/sports in general, not just hockey. 3 medals is pathetic, no matter how you paint it.

Re: Disappointment for Pakistan in Asian Games

I agree the whole sports infrastructure needs a major overhaul but we have never been good in athletics, swimming etc.

We were still a force in hockey in the 90s and seeing our team struggle against lowly rated Japan and China hurts even more.

Re: Disappointment for Pakistan in Asian Games

We were very good in athletics in the 50s and 60s at the asian levels with several gold medals in the games! Boxers have always been medal winners at the asiads! So were our yactsmen! Out volley ball team went up to semi final!

In fact we won more gold medals than India in Beijing games in 1990.
