dilema for a doc in the US!

Re: dilema for a doc in the US!

I personally think her best bet is doing Clinical Research....I don't know whether she has a Visa problem or not(even if she does need a visa),many research positions are available, they would either sponsor J1 or H1 Visa. These Clinical Research usually pay around somewhere between 18 k to 30 K anually. They are usually related to Molecular Biology. They usually ask for Researchers to stay for a couple of years atleast, but if during that research she changes her mind she can take the Medical Exams & then join the Residency.

I would suggest not to ask her to become a PA or a Nurse. Most doctors don't like being PA's/Nurses etc(& most PA schools are Very competitive and they usually don't take foriegners) & besides she would be under a Doctors supervision to work, which i am sure she would not like.
Best of Luck.

Re: dilema for a doc in the US!

Yup.
The clinical research bit sounds the like the most intelligent option. And yes, she would need a work visa for it. The compensation sounds very low.. but you cant have everything.

Any ideas on where/how to look for such openings? Are they medical/research related job sites?

Re: dilema for a doc in the US!

Pharmacist needs to have a totally different degree. In order to get the license, she has to study all the courses and pass the exam. Its a full time study just like medicine or any other degree.
I'm not sure if a doctor can get some course exemptions in the Pharmacy school.

Re: dilema for a doc in the US!

she can work in many fields related to health care policy, research and advocacy in health care specifically within immigrant populations.
she can pursue MPH and work in nyc dept of health as a health educator or officer.
she can teach PRE MED students - many Pakistani and Indian and Bengali and Middle Eastern students would really be thankful for that.
i know a few non profit and private agencies that take medical professionals and utilize their knowledge for the betterment in term of human services and not necessarily hospital related medical professional world of work.
may you two be united soon, amen.

Re: dilema for a doc in the US!

When she is in USA...She should try writing to all the big Medical Schools.

For their contact persons/addresses::Like if she is New York...Google the web site address for e.g for State University of New York Medical School.Go to their "Research" section then go to their Individual departments for e.g Sciences/Biotech etc...Get the name of the Head of Department of Research...Make a nice CV & then e-mail or post mail that CV with a personal statement mentioning her "Research Interests." The new researchers can make around 25000$ annually ...It can be a pocket money for her and an outlet for her to familiarise herself with the field...Besides many Chinese/Indians get a work permit like that.

Re: dilema for a doc in the US!

khirox you location says minneapolis so I assume you are not really interested in opportunities in NYC or chicago or dallas.

talk to docs in minneapolis for starters.

Re: dilema for a doc in the US!

khirox .......... i suggest only 2 options , based on what majority of "girls" (i've seen ) do after MBBS ..................either MPH or sonography ........... (first) both have scope and r highly respectful , (second ) it takes 1-2 yrs to get a respective diploma (3) payscale is good (4) job routine is pretty flexible ................

Re: dilema for a doc in the US!

i agree with ya hsap, i myself an diagnostic medical sonographer student, graduating pretty soon. loving every min of it..

Re: dilema for a doc in the US!

teach!

Re: dilema for a doc in the US!

teach what? medicine? ... errr

or pre med courses at some uni, like microbiology and stuff?

Re: dilema for a doc in the US!

Im sure teaching requires a Master's or a Teaching degree.

Re: dilema for a doc in the US!

thats why i asked what sort of teaching.

Re: dilema for a doc in the US!

for teaching, she can apply for science (bio/chem) opening in the highschool, if the person is selected and doesn't have certification, they give the teacher an year to get certification.

To teach at community college or university level, she would need atleast a masters degree.

Re: dilema for a doc in the US!

Good advice. However, to teach she would need a work visa, and a teaching visa wont be approved without formal teaching experience/education.

Work Visa's in the other areas, like reasearch, would be easier to come by due to education in the medical field. At least thats what i think.
