I am 80% with you if you intend to say that being coward, in a given situation, where we could have been brave otherwise is being "mean". I may further elaborate my thoughts on this if I live.

the world is fine about situational factors. yes, they hamper. but only as much as you allow them to. esp in human relations, the situational factors are not uncontrollable environmental disasters.
the contrived state of a man or a woman, in being PUSHED to make a choice at work with supervisors or colleagues, with the nuclear family members, or between two people who have an intimate relationship, cannot be blamed solely on the situations.
there is much to it, in the way of being listless as an individual, as alibis are seen to be respites where as they are not. and so, the statement is there a difference between being mean or coward under these circumstances?
there is something called self determination, & that God given right to be competent, confident and stead-fast in being a deciding human being for very own personal decisions. one ought not to go by hearsay or be cramped with doubts and fears, for due to that, no relationship with anyone, will come out to be comfortable and trustworthy for the long run or the short run.
consulting other people, is alright, but always following suggestions by others or their demands, and not thinking and acting for oneself, or attributing mistrust and no trust to someone who actually is trustworthy and is according all trust, is a place in which... what do you think, a mean person will end up like that or a coward?
and if they were to reverse their actions, how each may do so?
