If they think you can get the job done then i don't think a degree really matters for that position.
i got my first 'proper' full time job before i graduated (2 semesters left). It was based on my previous experience (internships). i had to move to a different state but did finish my degree by taking the remaining courses at the local uni.

This is only possible I guess in the 'west', if you don't have a degree here, you won't get a secretary position, let alone a senior level management position. I am sure there are exceptions here, I guess it depends on the organisation; but working with HR for 4 months I have learnt a thing or two and that basically tells me no degree is an automatic disqualifier. I think Education will always be important.
As a side note, in the Middle East, employers can also specify the race, color, creed, and gender of the successful candidate which I find very distasteful.
