Regardless of being stupid or a waste of money, this is nothing compared to the luxuries rulers in India were used to just a 100 years ago. Actually $4.9 Million is really nothing. With so many diamonds, I would have thought it would cost $400 Millions. I am going to guess these are cheap diamonds.
