So are you suggesting that there was no consumption of alcohol prior to the arrival of the British?

Not even by the mughals?

Muzna jee .. mera kehna hai ke, Mogul-on ke Zamaane main bhee Agar meray Dada aur Dadi amma aap ke Dada aur Dadi Amma ko unke ghar milnay jaatay to, Chahay hum dono Hindu ho ya Mussalman, Aap ki Dadi Amma, yeh nahi ketee....

Aa-iye Aa-iye Tashreef rakhiye. kya haal hai? muddat ho gyai aap say milay. Kehiye kya pijiye ga? Oh haa-n, Aise maukey ke liye maine Angrezi sharab ke ek botal sumbhal ke rakhi hai. Vo ek Angrez saudagar aaya tha, usay kuch pais-oon ke zaroorat thee, bari sasti baich gaya? Kya umda sharaab hai. Aray Aray aap Khare kyon hain? baithiye na , mai abhi sharab aur kuch glass le ke aati hoon ???

To yeh hai desi Tehzeeb ki baat .

khan_sahib,

There is no "them" vs "us" when it comes to drinking. Goras are not "them" in this case. It's the choice of people that makes them drink. Both poor and middle class people drink socially - I have no idea what kinda parties you have been going to.

Alcohol compliments a social gathering. It's more enjoyable than compared to, say, orange juice. Why the heck would somebody want to drink something out of the blue just because 'goras' are doing it? People drink because it's enjoyable, not because some Joe Doe is doing it. Similiarly, when people drink in Pakistan, they don't drink because it's a 'west' thing, they drink it because, guess what, it's enjoyable.

Peer pressure is a different thing and I agree that with peer pressure, you can start smoking, drugs, etc or whatever. But a person's peer pressure group doesn't know any specific ethnicity. It's not exclusively 'gora vs us' kinda thing. I think you are too conscious of your own ethnicity.

As far as Quran is concerned, many people follow the teachings of it and many don't. God be the judge of it, not self-rightous people like you who'd pick up Quran and issue fatways and start bashing people who drink or eat pork. If it's only about faith that counts not the hazardous effects of alcohol etc then you don't have a right to bash people who drink since their faith is different than yours - theirs include drinking and eating pork. Fact of the matter is that people like you bash drinking to justify your own blind faith. If a person choose to drink moderately and doesn't drive while under the influence then I don't see anything wrong with his/her choice and it definitely doesn't give me any right start bashing him/her. That would be similar to somebody who prays 5 times a day and bashes every other person who doesn't just because he's virtuous by his own standards.

i HAD PREPARED A VERY LONG COMPREHENSIVE POST MAINLY BAD EFFECT OF aLCOHOL.BUT Guppo Post ate it deleted it in the process tsk tsk.

Queer,

I know i am rather ambigous ,however

The point simply is if you take the insignificant doubtfull & dubious benefit of wine in heart diseases ,its like if you took sleeping pills & had sound rest full sleep ,i can bet if youfollowed such heart patients ,they will show the benefit of TENSIONFREE>DEEP NON ANXIETY NIGHTS SLEEP ,leading to lowered b.p helping heart also lowered stress helping relif stress on heart .So even sleeping pillcan be helpfull ,but we dont take sleeping pill every night for having that benefit wht should we take doubtful chemica ,wine for we know no chemical is HARMLESS when ingested. If the harm outweigh like in toxic chemical ET0h selling it for minor benefit is like false advertisement.

I mentioned about men having greater testimonial weight b/c i see your recommendation of dietary prescription to rabbit highly followed somewhere ,which is fine ,i only let you know that convincing us would take more scrutiny ,putting to double blind study & cross examination of your thesis & dissertation by big fish like me.

Cheers

Once again, i dont see why you consider yourself a big fish (if you forget the stink). for one, none of your sentences make any sense. did you just say that men are more intelligent than women, and cannot be fooled easily? and arent you dragging in Islam to support your jurassic views?

Because of the high-profile arrests of President Bush’s 19-year-old daughter for underage drinking offenses, suddenly the debate about lowering the legal drinking age is back in the national spotlight.

Jenna Bush’s two arrests in less than a month for consuming alcohol and trying to purchase alcohol with a fake identification card, has placed the drinking age debate in the national media, with the old argument that if an 18-year-old is old enough to vote, sign contracts, join the armed forces, and get married, he or she should be old enough to drink a beer.

“It’s one of the stupidest laws in America,” Justin Schmid, 21, a student at Southern Methodist University in Dallas told Fox News. “You can be drafted by your country, go to war — yet you can’t have a beer. You can be tried as an adult — yet you can’t have a beer.”

But is it that stupid?

The problem with the arguments for lowering the legal drinking age is it is simply not in the best interest of the public’s safety to do so. Teenagers who drink are a danger to themselves and others – especially on the highways.

We Tried It Before
The drinking age was first lowered to 18 in many states back in the Vietnam War era. The country was asking thousands of its young men to fight and die for their country on foreign soil, so the popular thinking was, “How can we ask them to die for their country and not let them have a drink if they want one?”

But the lower drinking age begin to take a toll on the nation’s highways. The number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities began to rise at alarming rates, and a high percentage of those involved young drivers. Congress again put pressure on the states to raise the drinking age because of this startling increase in highway deaths.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that raising the drink age to 21 has reduced traffic fatalities involving 18- to 20-year-old drivers by 13 percent and has saved an estimated 19,121 lives since 1975. Twenty of twenty-nine studies conducted between 1981 and 1992 reported significant decreases in traffic crashes and crash fatalities following an increase in drinking age.

Simply Saves Lives
Over 40 percent of all the 16-to-20 year olds who died in 1994 were killed in car crashes, half of which were alcohol-related. The number of intoxicated youth drivers in fatal crashes dropped 14.3 percent from 1983 to 1994 – the largest decrease of any age group during this time period – indicating that the higher legal drinking age simply saves lives.

The evidence for keeping the drinking age at 21 is so overwhelming, we doubt that we would be even having this debate if Jenna Bush was just another college student, rather than the young, attractive daughter of the President of the United States.

And if she had been arrested for causing an accident in which someone was injured or killed, rather than just trying to use a fake ID, we suspect the national media would be coming down on the other side of the lower drinking age debate.
