look under sofas and cushions,
look behind the entertainment unit and/or bookshelves,
look in other rooms where the kids may have wandered off to,
look high up on shelves as another adult, having found a child playing with it, might have placed it out of their reach.
look in the toy box.
call up the guests that came with diaper bags and ask if they would kindly look in the bags as the remote may have accidently fallen in (this is a very PC translation of: your kid may have stashed my DVD remote in his/her diaper bag).
