Culture Dominates Over Religion

Re: Culture Dominates Over Religion

i was part of that thread too and as far as i can tell, no one (at least moi) was asking anybody to name their kids in a certain way.. the argument was against people naming their kids because of a certain bias or chauvinism.. something that amounts to a denial of their culture, their history and their heritage.. nothing to do with obligations to the hindu world or something.. in fact no one is obliged to any community for anything.. just like pakistani muslims are not obliged to hindus in any manner just because thousands of years ago their ancestors were hindus, the same way paki muslims are not obliged to mimic arabs just because they brought islam to them.. that was the point of discussion.. what you are saying is indeed right, people should be in a position to incorporate all good elements of other cultures without any ill-will or bias.. but all that happens only in a place called utopia..

PCG, there’s no such thing as ‘Indian’ culture, there are millions of cultures within India, unique and distinct from one another – Harzrt Mark Twain refers to India as the birthplace of civilizations. Similarly, there are dozens distinct cultures within Pakistan. Usually little schmuks like to talk all sophisticated and siht, which is quite comical.

Islam is a culture to where it was first created, and not to other cultures. Islam is part of an “Arab” culture; all rituals that it has were part of Arabs for millennium.

Now if some people don’t like extravagant cultural activities, they are welcome to give their money to poor instead of killing a sick littke goat or going for Haj. How is that?

And yeah, there is no such thing as Pakistani culture either. Don’t try looking for something that doesn’t exist.

Argh. Once again the culture vs. religion debate. I already showed using NYAs and Sabah's own definitions that Islam has a distinct culture with various sub-cultures. Consider it like the EU.

Re: Culture Dominates Over Religion

Twain must've mixed up his quotes on India with those he meant to say about mesapotemia......

Re: Culture Dominates Over Religion

Cheche … pay attention to Civilization(S) part of his quote, and he not only refers to Indus Valley as birthplace of Civilization(S) but calls India not only an Incubator but also a cradle of Civilization(S), Mesopotamia was just but one. No doubt about it.

Re: Culture Dominates Over Religion

Religious culture or ethnic culture being more important is subjective, it depends on the individual. To me personally both have their own place but if I felt a certain aspect of my ethnic culture was in conflict with my religious culture (how I believe Islam requires me to be) I’d kick that aspect out of the window goodbye.

We are pretty confused when it comes to ethnic culture, Indic culture was always ours, it wasn’t an outside influence unlike Iranian or Arab culture, when we became Muslim we should have gave up our former religious culture but maintained our ethnic culture but because of our slave mentality we tried being foreigners only half managing to adopt their ethnic culture(s) which has reflected in how we perceive our own ethnic identity, we’re left confused and lost, like sokoon said in the other thread and it back fired “kawaa chala hans ki chaal to apni bhi bhool gaya”.

We're not Persians, I rememeber when I was about 10 I would watch Mahabarata (because of the beautifull 'deer eyed' tall olive skinned shilpa shetty like women) and I understood it better than the over Persianised Urdu because then I could only speak my own language and the words and phrases they used were same as in my language only pronounced slighlty differently e.g. Putr as opposed Puttar.

All I’m saying is be original and stand shoulder to shoulder with other Muslim nations instead of behind or below them, why mimic others when we have our own great heritage? Accept it and if need be enhance it by borrowing from others but don’t be complete wannabes, I’m not saying have pride and look down on others all I’m saying is be content with who you are.
