wonder why they don’t try this kind of stuff in Pakistan…get all the old guns and zaz them up with some technology and let them play a game in the middle of a tournament.

Azhar Mahmood 132 second Test v South Africa in 1998 @ Kingsmead, Durban
Two things about this innings:
- It came against a top pace attack, Donald and Pollock, on their home turf
- Pakistan were in real trouble when he came in. His innings saved the match for us. Pakistan infact won the test by 29 runs. The series in South Africa was drawn 1-1

This was the series when the Akmal nightmare started. Watch Akmal fumble the take of a pretty simple leg break at 2:25 to Sachin. Pakistan was lucky all three wickets did not involve catch behind.

^^ this explains it..it was the time of major politics in the team and board…aamer was VC so he led in the 2nd test. I was getting married then so didn’t watch any cricket in those years…

Superficially, Pakistan looked even more powerful going into the final Test. Inzamam-ul-Haq, their finest batsman, had recovered from his ankle injury, and their best player, Wasim Akram, who had been left out of the original tour party, flew in. But this move by the Pakistan Board, going over the heads of the selectors, appeared to upset the team spirit carefully rebuilt by vice-captain Aamir Sohail in Durban. There was worse. Sohail handed back the captaincy to Rashid Latif, who declared himself fit; but Latif did not appear to possess Sohail’s leadership qualities and his authority was not helped when he made a pair and kept wicket erratically. Wasim did not look match-fit, and Inzamam scored six and four. Pakistan imploded and South Africa levelled the series with some ease.
