Back to the topic, I think in past players were not as closely monitored by media perhaps due to not so much money was involved in those days. Now, all players are monitored for discipline, commitment and performance by team management and media; if any of players is treated differently it makes other members think of their standing in the team and they start demanding same treatment (freedom from discipline) which becomes a headache for the team management.
I think all players should be controlled by a common set of rules, no exceptions, anyone breaks a rule gets punishment.
