reason 1: the cotton fibers are left in your ear, and bacteria can grow around those fibers, and give you an infection, that can make you deaf. think about growing fungus in your ears 
reason 2: the wax helps catch the bacteria and dust and other nasty stuff, which if it gets in your body can not only give you a terrible ear infection, but can also make your nose and throat unwell.
btw the ear wax is self draining. it means after a while, just like phlegm goes in your tummy, so does the earwax (not sure if it goes in your tummy). so constant cleaning of earwax is not necessary.
