Last year I attended a 2 days GM seminar on competitive and safety reviews on 2 cars in comparison to GM's Sunfire & Cavalier.
We took Honda Civic & Hyandai Elantra for close comparison in quality and safety.
Ever since then I inform every one to avoid Civics if you want value for your money.
hard to give details here,,,but a small test you can do is this,,
Take a Honda Civic 2004 - 2005 ,,,
Stand in line with the front wheel facing straight.
Now bend and see side ways right under the wheel arch behind the tire and you will be able
to see right across the wheel arch on the other side of the cars. So its see through,,,
This is a compromise on metrial use and costs from the manufacturing point of view.
Because the manufacturers feel that Civics are not designed for 'Speed' performances therefore this 'gapping hole' is not an issue or the 'Drag factor' while driving on the highways is easily managabal through low consumption Enhine any how.
But the crosion factor and 'Aqua condition' don't provide too much cover for its Engine etcss..

Raindance - that gaping hole is where the steering unit will exit the bellhouse to engage the knuckle which is part of the damper unit, just like the older cavaliers, it also acts as a crumple zone.
anyway - the safest cars would be volvos or saabs.
but the screaming power of civic type R will make you addicted.

IMO , Noop!
The whole inner wheel arch is missing and done away with. Its unique to Honda Civics and has noticable drag while driving too, but then again its compensated through gasoline consumption. at least this what the manufacturers think.
Show me another Car which has this criteria. 
Corolas are good and economical.
Your safest cars volvos and Saab don’t fall into every house hold budget and seftey factor is unjust too. These cars are strong and useses a thicker gauge steel skin and shell cage , thats about it.
Subru’s are the most practical and safets Japanese cars built only in japan by Fuji heavy duty Industry. They are not manufactured any where else but in Japan only.

If you asked that question few days ago then i would said that Corolla but now at the moment its Civic cuz few days back i had Corolla but now we have just bought Civic.
but id you talk abt latest than Civic is better than corolla
