pyarilclarki: it can lead to public health issues through inbreeding/recessive genes.
Sarah: I think you have anwsered your own question.
I myself find it discusting and repulsive. And I do think the lot will agree.
Some people have incredible writing skills. I have read plenty of books I could not stop untill I read it all at once and had to read it again because of the beauty.
I guess some of such books can be discribed as music. It can have a tremendous impact on emotions.
Of interest, perhaps, is that all of the current candidate genes are associated with the “adaptive immune system” of disease-fighting cells (e.g., T cells) and humoral immunity (e.g., antibodies). The so-called adaptive immune system is a late development in evolution. Its elegantly complex cellular and humoral immune protection against disease is not found in older organisms from which we inherited so much of our genome. The adaptive immune system may have evolved from the more ancient system known as “innate immune response,” an inflammatory reaction that helps control infection in its earliest stages. On an evolutionary time scale, the human immune system may be regarded as a work in progress.
Sarah I read the book years ago and wasnt impressed...
This scene, I feel was a token gesture..added on to for effect...I didnt see any beauty, it didnt change or affect the story as such and I think it was there to create a talking point ...something for people to gasp at (as they did and it got more attention)
The past few years has seen books that are not the most amazing work of literature come to teh forefront becasue they appear to push barriers not because its essential to the story but for political correctness more than anything
theres been a fashion for books by authors from the asian sub continent who add an element or three of the following
Racism, incest, violence, homosexuality.... etc.. Im talking about books like "the God of Small things, A Suitable Boy and White teeth, Brick Lane etc
these have received huge acclaim but its a shame that they feel that they have to resort to this.
The stories on Desi Baba were enough to convince me incest is not wrong as long as it's somebody else doing it, not something I fancy for myself but a turn on when other people do it.
laizy lovely. I agree, I hated a suitable boy - it was just rubbish.
However the writters in themselves are extremely skilled. The manner in which many of above stories were weaved - was stupendous. They are all following the Rushdie route ala satanic verses and they all try and live up to idea of a subcontinent and culture of "foreign" values. This richnss and grandeur - but then I guess it may prehaps be necessary for them to sell that angle - to become crediable and wellknown enough to push some of their other work.< hopefully better stuff.
