I think you should ask pristine to google and find out how the olympic bid process works and how NY was selected over lesser towns in America, even without majority public support.
Canada? Canadians are still paying for the Montreal olympics from 70's. Plus the concept of summer olympics in Canada is an oxymoron. Who the hell wants to run the 100M in snow?

because Vancouver won the 2010 winter olympics bid. No Canadian city bid for the 2012 games because the International Olympics Commitee would not allow a single country to host both the winter and summer games consecutively.
Toronto had a bid for the 2012 summer games prepared but was only going to submit it in case Vancouver failed to get the 2010 winter games

San Fran would have been a better venue than NY.
On a side note I would personally prefer to vacation in Madrid than the other 4 cities.
