On the outset, if your friend enjoyed being a reports developer, than “technical writing" may be an avenue worthwhile exploring. There are special short courses that can help in this area and as a career track, technical writing has been one of the more stable job roles in the tech sector.
There are a lot of career options for Comp Sci grads & to consider the discipline of Comp Sci as simply “Programming” is an over-simplification. I graduated with an undergrad in Comp Sci… more specifically Software Engineering and I’ve worked in many roles & capacities.
If I were to provide an occupational outlook for CS grads, I’d say that programming /coding and database administration are the typical entry points for new grads, but beyond this, there are many other analysis-oriented roles that are available. “System Analyst” is another common designation that’s often used to signify a role that encompasses much more than pure coding.
Also, if someone enjoys the networking side of things, than a datacom analyst or a network administrator are options that can be considered. Pursuing such designations will however require additional qualifications and specialized training.
So, overall, I can say that your friend can select among different types of roles including: analysis-oriented; development oriented; administration-oriented; and research-oriented. Within these categories, your friend can look into specific domains and specializations e.g. E-Business, Web; ERP: DBS; Networks etc.
