yeah i mean there was some uproar after china disassembled that US plane which fell there and then sent it back. I recall fox news going all ape about that. But then picking a bone with China will cripple both countries' economies so that tension kinda subsided.

Exactly right. The engine that drives the China/US relationship is really an economic one. Everyone has found a comfortable equilibrium regarding Taiwan and everyone seems to realize the enormous benefits the Chinese and the Americans (as well as the rest of the world) can obtain through economic liberalization and development of China. A little chest thumping now and again plays well and advances the political interests of whatever groups are in power. For every chest thump though there are more than a few behind the scenes winks and nods.
