How did you ruin the betty crocker cake mix raania?

As far as I know and have seen, they always turn out perfect.. even when baked by first timers.

I put the mixture in a smaller pan and it spilled out while in the oven, I put another pan underneath and the mixture kept spilling so I ended up having unshapely chunks of sponge.
