1. Adoption by means of taking a child and giving him your sur name and raise up him/her as your son/daughter is not allowed in Islam. Mostly people adopt the child of their living siblings for that purpose.

2. Supporting an orphan is a different case. You don’t declare him/her as your son/daughter. This is encouraged.
