Re: Champions League 2005-2006
Manchestar united are out of the champions league in group stages. It happened for the first time in eleven years. They did not even qualify for the Uefa cup
What a shameful performance. It will be weird to see ManU not in knockout stages but in truth they never looked like winning tonight. The goals they gave away so softly through Ferdinand and Sylvestre sums up their defence. They relied too much on young Rooney who couldnt pull it off. It could be curtins for SAF’s manegorial career.
Re: Champions League 2005-2006
Werder Breman scraped through after winning as Udinese who needed a draw couldnt hold onto a draw against Barca who scared in last five minutes.
Final qualified teams
Group A: Juventas, Bayern Munich
Group B: Arsenal, Ajax
Group C: Barcelona, Werder Breman
Group D: Villareal, Benefica
Group E: AC Milan, PSV Eindhoven
Group F: Lyon, Real Madrid
Group G: Liverpool. Chelsea
Group H: Inter, Rangers
3 teams from spain
3 teams from England
3 teams from Italy
2 teams from Germany
2 teams from Holland
1 team from Portugal, Scotland and France
Re: Champions League 2005-2006
ManU played Villareal twice without Riquelme. Played a Benifica side that was missing 5 key players.
Pretty much a disgraceful performance. But what are you going to do? The team has some glaring holes, that need to be addressed. Even if they had everyone fully healthy, this is still a team that is rebuilding. It's a problem that money can fix though. Glazer needs to open up his wallet and make this team worthy of it's history.
9 straight years of making the knockout round of the champions league. Down the drain.
This is easily one of the worst ManU sides of my lifetime, I think. I was 10 the last time they missed the cut. Each year this is the trophy I want most. I much prefer it to the league. Hard times come but we go through it together. United forever.
Re: Champions League 2005-2006

Re: Champions League 2005-2006
Tonight's results
Real Madrid 0 - 1 Arsenal
Benefica 1 - 0 Liverpool
PSV 0 - 1 Lyon
Bayern Munich 1 - 1 AC Milan
I dont really rate Arsenal but they were really good against a shocking Real Madrid side. I just cannot imagine stupid coach (who actually had done well domestically prior to this game) took off the only real threat in Robinho 15 minutes into second half and kept out of form Ronaldo on the pitch. Though I still think Real will prevail through come the second leg.
Liverpool were better side for majority of the game but Benefica knicked a goal 10 minutes from time. Liverpool should still win it at their fortress Anfield. Bayern Munich have only themselves to blame after givign a silly penalty in second half and Milan got their away goal.
Re: Champions League 2005-2006
Chelsea Barcelona match at Stamford Bridge was as exciting and as controversial as last year their second leg match last year. Barcelona won it 2-1 but Chelsea showed great performance after Del Horno was sent off in 39th minute. They actually lead 1-0 till barca equalized and eventually 10 men Chelsea couldnt hold against a mighty Barca attack. Although that waste of money Drogba should have scored with one clear chance and restoreed Chelsea’s lead. Barca have given themselves great advantage though after getting two away goals. Great exhibition of football that match was :k: You can only admire Chelsea as they could have parked the bus in front of goal but they went for it even with 10 men and refuted those boring claims.
Cant wait for second leg.
Tonight’s results:
Chelsea 1 - 2 Barca
Rangers 2 - 2 Villarreal
Ajax 2 - 2 Inter
Werder Bremen 3 - 2 Juventus
All away sides got two goals and it is surprsing seeing Juve conceding three goals. Inter got themselves back after goign 2- 0 down. Awesome!!
Re: Champions League 2005-2006
Just caught the highlights of Werder-Juve match and it was just so exciting. First Juve conceded and then lead and then Werder came from behind and nicked it. Brilliant match but you would still back Juve to prevail at home.
Re: Champions League 2005-2006
Do you mind posting the highlights on here?
Re: Champions League 2005-2006
second legs start from tonight (in a short bit infact). Cant wait for second encounter between Barca-Chelsea. There has been so much controversy regarding first leg and maurinho's comments. Barca looks odds on to go through but who would dare discarding chelsea and 'the special one'.
Re: Champions League 2005-2006
Barca avenged last year's CL second round encounter. Match ended 1-1 after a superb goal from Ronaldinho and penalty from Lampard. Chelsea never created anything. I just dont get why Gudjohnsen was left on the bench and robben was played in the middle.
A good game. Damage was done at Stamform bridge though.
Werder breman are the unluckiest team on the planet while Juve is the luckiest team. They were two minutes from elimination when Werder keeper let ball roll out of hid hands and edmilson scored. Werder Bremen would have made it to QF for the first time in their history but a stupid schoolboy error ruined it. Rarely you see blunders of such proportions at highest level.
Re: Champions League 2005-2006
Champions league holder Liverpool are out losing to benefica 0 - 2 at home. Benefica are dark horse for sure throwing out first ManU and now Liverpool at anfield. Liverpool hit the post twice and could have scored 5 alone in the first half but they have only themselves to blame for that.
Arsenal sent Real Madrid out of the champions league after a 0-0 draw at highbury. Its really heart breaking to see Real playing so so badly. What a sad demise. Ronaldo was so disappointing today.
Arsenal is the only british team left in the competition. Although they are following the exact pattern of Liverpool’s last year campaign ($hitty domestically, brilliant in Europe) but I just dont see them beating the likes of Barca and Ac Milan. Lets see.
Ac Milan absolutely hammered Bayern Munich 4 -1 . Awesome!! and Lyon slaughtered PSV 4 - 0.
I just dont see how Barca can be stopped now. Maybe Juve or Milan can but Barca won the final against Chelsea yesterday.
Re: Champions League 2005-2006
Champions league last eight focus are ac milan, ajax, arsenal, barcelona, benfica, inter milan, juventus, lyon amd villarreal
Re: Champions League 2005-2006
Quarter line draws were held today and they are all set to serve up mouth watering encounters.
Arsenal v Juventus
Ac Milan v Lyon
Barcelona v Benefica
Villarreal v Inter/Ajax
Patrick Viera will be returning to Arsenal and it is going to be a good match. Juventus should be strong enough to prevail over two legs. I cant help but anticipate a Barca-Juve final this year.
Re: Champions League 2005-2006
:) "Champions of Europe" failed to score a single goal in 180 minutes, and against Benfica........and "Champions of England" can only score on penalties. :( . I still don't understand why Chelsea was rated alongside Milan and Juventus.
Till now champions League is once again dominated by Italians and even Inzaghi ( :p ) is back in form and is too tough for the rest of Europe........ An(other) all-Italian final (and yet another possible Milan Derbi in knockout stage) is not out of sight.
Re: Champions League 2005-2006
Arsenal 2 - 0 Juve
Pathetic Juve was never in it and Arsenal absolutely dominated them. Viera come back to Arsenal ground turned sore. They will welcome in form Del Peiro and nedved for the second leg but will miss viera. Its gonna take a helluva performance from Juve to win it over two legs.
Benefica 0 - 0 Barca
Barca missed like 5-6 open goals. Eto, Van Bommel, Deco all missed open chances and its still an open game.
