I just started one on sadqa-e-jaaria. I suppose the topics are inter-connected.
you don’t get it. What’s the difference between me asking questions about the ‘space’-aspect and you asking questions about the ‘time’-aspect? Both are pretty much the same: if one asks about 40 days on Mars (like I would) or 50 days on Earth (like you do), it is the same basic question
I read your earlier post again. You mention we can pray and offer fatiah..but I failed to understand why reading Quran won’t help the dead. <-----how about if it’s not read on Chaliswaaan like daily if I read surahs for the dead for their sawab it’s not going to help?

sorry.wrong post.
In my opinion/belief it will not. Person is already dead, his or her book of deeds is closed. No more “naikiyan” or “buriyan” for this person. You cannot add sawwab for him/her neither can you add “buriyaan” or sins for him/her. Reading Quran will help you no doubt.
There is no significance of chaliswaaan. It is partly because of Hindu influences and partly because of the influence from the immediate western neighbor.
In Islam, as far as I know, only 3 days are for mourning after somebody's death. Even during that you are not supposed to beat yourself and make a lot of noise. (May Allah give everyone patience during such times)
Chaliswaan tradition is a burden on many poor in Pakistan. I have seen people borrow money to have jemeraats and chaleeswaans. Islam is simple and does not burden anyone. Such traditions are simply inventions in religion.
Excessive, perpetual or extravagrant mourning is discourged. Life should slowly begin to stabalize again after a painful loss.:
**Sahih Muslim, Book 009, Number 3550: Umm 'Atiyya (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) had said: A woman must not observe mourning for one who had died for more than three (days) except for four months and ten days in the case of her husband … **
Another saying of the Prophet :saw:
**Sahih Muslim, Book 042, Number 7064: Anas b. Malik reported Allah’s Messenger (way peace be upon him) as saying: Three things follow the bier of a dead man. two of them come back and one is left with him: the members of his family. wealth and his-good deeds. The members of his family and wealth come back and the deeds alone are left with him. **
Thanks Islamabad. :-)

To be precise, it is mainly a shia influence (Iran). Yes it is in a Hadith as I mentioned in my second post.

The four months and ten days is the iddat period.

I agree on your bolded statement as that is a fact.
The italicized part is not true. I had inquired about it from many folk including local scholars, they say that you can bless the person by reading Quran for them or donating funds to a proper charity for them. i.e. Donating books of knowledge to a madarsa under his/her name and those books will help the deceased in the form of sadqa. Also, the person who had performed the deed will be given sawaab for it too.
The afghan and indo paki ritual is a farce but there is no harm in reading for the deceased, just that it shouldn't be ritualized or labelled.
