Re: Cell phone driving ban begins in Ontario

oh .. i just wrote a detailed mail to family.. cuz sometimes they miss something like that ..

hello everyone.. just making sure people are aware of some of the complexities about the new law of ZERO TOLERANCE towards usage of hand-held devices. Law is in effect as of Feb 01, 2010 after a grace period of roughly 3 months. Law:

#1. applies to ANY “hand-held” device being operated/looked at, so fixed gps navigation systems, touch-requiring dvd players are no exceptions. Cellular phones, require a wired/wireless hands-free headsets. Texting, calling, receiving a call, all are prohibited. “PUBLIC” (read: non-emergency, non-law-enforcement) drivers are also prohibited from using laptops, ipods, any devices that require taking your eyes off the road.

#2. is also in affect at this condition, yet people don’t realize: STOPPING at a STOP sign or a** RED LIGHT** is considered VEHICLE IN TRANSIT. DO NOT REACH for your device while light is red, because if caught, you WILL BE charged and it will be CLEAR ON TICKET. This will restrict you from winning a pleading not-guilty case.

ONLY safe way to make/receive phone calls is if you are pulled at a side, and your four-way(hazard) lights are blinking. (That is the only exception where vehicle wouldn’t be considered in-transit).

IF YOUR CAR BREAKS DOWN at a stop sign/red light, and you are calling in for tow/help/battery-boost, avoid being confronted/investigated for a possible ticket, by releasing trunk and turning on your 4way flashers (if possible). This helps the officers to visually notify that you’re not in regular driving conditions. They will pull up behind u with slow-moving yellow (or red+blue) flashers, in which case you STAY IN THE CAR. (its considered assault on officer to come out of your vehicle or open the door before officer asks you to).

Spread the word around.
