Re: Canadian/US Dollar and Investing

  1. You've got USD. Keep it in USD. Keep it in America.

It's only a matter of time before the american housing market correct itself - that is AFTER a recession. I'd look into buying into the housing market when the economy bottoms out.

Look into the smith manuever and make your mortgage tax deductable by obtaining a re-advanceable mortgage. Use the Home Equity Line of Credit to invest into dividend stocks or rental investment. Come tax time, deduct the interest on the HELOC. Take the tax credit and put it towards your mortgage. Increase your HELOC, and repeat over and over again. It's a risky because it require some work but you'll be looking at a very nice gain in 10+ years when you need the money.

  1. Gold is at an all time high (underthedome, 2007).

  2. You'd be insane to take any of this advice seriously.

Re: Canadian/US Dollar and Investing

I have a financial planner now who is going to manage my portfolio. I am now thinking of investing some of the money, at least, very long term, for my retirement, and using the rest in a few years for school fees etc. I like the financial planner, he is very young and personable and we have a good relationship based on very little time together. But at the same time I am hesitant about having someone so involved with something that is so personal. We will be negotiating fees in December and will start investing and diversifying the portfolio then, but I would like to know what I should keep in mind, what is reasonable etc etc etc, what I should be on the lookout for (with regard to the guy). I am new at this so I do not want to make any mistakes. Advice? Does anyone here have experience with TD Waterhouse?

Also, I am concerned about how well this 'stuff', for lack of a better term, transfers. We will most likely be moving to either the US or England in about three to four years. What should I make sure to do in anticipation of the move?

The questions sound naive, I know, but I really am ignorant when it comes to this. My father always tried to get me interested in money and managing it but it seemed so boring. I should have paid attention then.

Re: Canadian/US Dollar and Investing

Oh, and the money is staying in USD.

Re: Canadian/US Dollar and Investing

^^ And what about Utopian socialism?

Re: Canadian/US Dollar and Investing

I am not a socialist. I am not an idealist. I do not believe in utopia. I am not an optimist. I go to school. I want to do my PhD - it is not free. I want to learn and that requires money. I was given money, I will use it, increase it. Shall I run away and live in the woods to prove my Marxism? And what will that achieve? I will be impotent. In this world, you have to be somebody to get something done. My route is education.

Now get lost.

Re: Canadian/US Dollar and Investing

Pardon me ? Now get lost , well that’s the first nice thing i have heard today . Thank you very much indeed ! you really made my day !

From your little nice speech , I hope I am rightly presuming here that you believe on some quixotic thing which doesn’t occur in practical world .

By the way , who misinformed you that having Dr in front of your name makes you intelligent and literate.
