U.N. vote `embarrassing,’ leader tells Jewish voters

THORNHILL - In a powerful appeal to Jewish voters in Toronto, Canadian Alliance Leader Stockwell Day last night delivered a carefully crafted attack on the Liberal government’s criticism of Israel in the recent violence in the Middle East.
At a nomination meeting in the social hall of a Thornhill synagogue, Day told about 600 people, including many Orthodox Jews and many self-described Liberals, that he found Jean Chrétien’s support of a United Nations resolution condemning Israel ``embarrassing and unsettling.‘’
Day, who rarely uses notes, read from a text and said his position is ``clear and unequivocal.‘’
``We support Israel’s right to exist in peace and security with its neighbours.
And, yes, we recognize the right of the Palestinian people to achieve their legitimate aspirations through peaceful negotiations,'' he said. We call upon the government of Canada to be equally clear in its support for Israel sovereignty at this time of need.‘’
Day called the Oct. 7 U.N. Security Council resolution one-sided'' and unbalanced’’ because it singled out Israel as the sole party to blame in the latest outburst of violence. ``If Canada is to be seen as an even-handed party in the peace process that will be trusted by both sides we cannot support unbalanced resolutions of this kind,‘’ he said, to loud applause.
Day also suggested the resolution has given rise to anti-Semitism, saying ``these developments are not without consequences.‘’
``Here at home, as the Canadian Jewish Congress has noticed, there has been an outburst of anti-Semitic acts in three weeks since (U.N.) resolution 1322, and I want to make it perfectly clear that I deplore and denounce anti-Semitic speech and acts in all forms.‘’
Day chided Thornhill MP Elinor Caplan for not attending a recent meeting of Jewish leaders concerned about Canada’s position. Many in the audience booed at the sound of her name, and called out ``Shame.‘’
Afterward, lawyer John Syrtash said Jews are now asking themselves why we're always voting Liberal.'' He predicted that will change, saying fears that the Alliance party was anti-Semitic have no base. Certain people told us they were anti-Semites, and we do our homework, and we know different now.‘’
Day also endorsed the Jewish community’s desire to fund private religious schools, saying he would bring in tax credits to give parents who pay for private schooling for their children. ``I can assure you from personal experience that I understand educating your children is more than a right, it’s a solemn obligation.‘’
