That's not true, an Indian can't understand the proper Urdu spoken on say PTV News just as we can't understand most of what is said on Star News, the structure of both languages is the same but the vocabulary is very different, unless you've read a dictionary of the other language they are both mutually unintelligible.
My Muslim friend from Dehli says he has problems understanding even the Hindus of his own home city because his Urdu is proper Urdu and derives a lot of it's vocabulary from Persian, Arabic and Turkish with a Prakrit structure and very few words which are Sanskrit based.
The language we use day to day is a mix of Urdu and Hindi and in fact what we hear in Bollywood movies is leaning a bit more towards the Urdu side, the song lyrics are usually pure Urdu with few Hindi words because most of the song writers are Muslim. You’ll never see an Indian Hindu be able to speak Urdu like that in real life or even an Indian Muslim unless he is ethnically Urdu speaking.

My Uncle's enitre family are from Hyderabad in India and they can all speak, read and write pure Urdu. My cousins did Urdu as their second langauge till class 10.
If only a few Indian Muslims (from the North) spoke good Urdu then that language would be dead in India. You're right about Hindi film songs and lyricists being Urdu speaking Muslims. We've had a steady stream of great Urdu lyricists - Gulzar, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Javed Akhtar, Shakeel Badayuni etc. We've also had some great non-Muslim Urdu lyricists like Anand Bakshi, Shailendra etc.
As to the DPS scandal, such things happen in every country and the rich elite have always had their own standard of morals and living. One of my former roommates in college in the US was from Pakistan and from what I heard its is more or less the same there too for rich kids - sex, drugs and rock n' roll. The only difference is that now everyone has video cams and other gadgets and it is easier for the rest of us to get a peek into the decadent elite lifestyle.

i opened a similar thread right after the hottest indo pak series to apologize indians if they were offended by our comments. So i guess both side need to be a little patience towards each other.

My interest in coming to Gup Shup was cricket. I liked to discuss cricket.. and in the place I live now.. there is hardly any cricket. So I wanted some intelligent cricket discussion. I didn’t know that there existed all this forums before.
But having got myself in. I know that this is basically a Pakistani forum. I didn’t want to get involved into any matters of Pakistani affairs. But I was really interested in how Pakistan thinks about their country and their outlook and also to get a point of view from that side. Actually I had high respect for Pakistan.. well it came from cricket.. because I admit that they are quite a good cricket playing nation. And I support Pakistan whenever India is not playing. And u should be also happy that my father who was in Navy also support Pakistan when India is not playing and are playing against teams like Australia and England.
But now I am getting a strange feeling. I am seeing religion being dominant in every discussion. Hatred of India is so much that some never miss a chance to ridicule India..( u may say that certain Indian forums also do that, but no secular Indian forum does that, I believe this forum is secular). Selective reporting. distorting the facts. And more over I always had the idea till now that Muslims are very nice people.. because all the Muslims whom I know was very kind I have never had any enmity for a Muslim. But from some of the post some of u make gives me a real horrible feeling about Islam. Does Islam never recognizes any other religion. I mean.. come-on who is anybody to judge what is God. I have no idea about religion. To me its just a moral code. And I hope no religion practice hatred towards other religions.
I am doing science… educated in a well reputed institute in India( some guy has the name of that institute as a quote in his signature) and now in a foreign country pursuing my PhD. I mean.. should religion play so much role in once life. I mean what is the difference between people like some of us here and the RSS( I think there are people who are from RSS here too). I hate RSS because they want to get religion into politics and also for their Islam phobic ideas.. But I am so happy that in India such a group is well in minority. But in my horror I am realizing that Islam has infiltrated a lot into Pakistani life. Did Jinnah wanted that to happen when he got Pakistan independent. Somebody was saying my Muslim brothers in India. Do some of u need to identify that u r a Muslim. Religion should be a personal one. Does any body need to discriminate based on being Hindu, Muslim and Christian.
Then coming to Indian part.. why are Pakistanis obsessed about India.. Somebody had said in one particular post that it should be India 1,2,3. Well it looks like that now right.
I am not saying we are all angels in India. I got sucked up into some of the debate which after some time I realized was pure waste of time to explain something to somebody. I wanted to keep my plate clean. I tried.. but I don’t know, may be I didn’t do that well. The reason could be the stupid patriotic feeling for the mother land override the logical reasoning and fair attitude.
There are some people in this forum, (Indians) who could basically convey the same points but in a less sarcastic and rude way. It would also help a lot. I hope they realize that.:)

homer man, firstly let me say i have made several friends on this forum. though i think i’d have been friends with the same folks even if they were chinese or lithuanian.
coming to what you wrote, here’s my observation. and this isnt a one time incident. any time there is talk of such similarities as you have listed, there is a whole bunch of others who feel their identity as pakistanis is threatened. they make it a point to be hostile, and tend to get nasty with comments about skin color, BO, accents, whatnot. anyone who gets friendly with indians is defamed, shot down, given the title of chamcha, sometimes accused of being an indian imposter. i have often got the feeling that on this forum, many otherwise levelheaded pakistanis do not want to be friendly with indians for fear of losing their “identity”, and as long as this complex remains, i am afraid these stupid fights will continue. what we all need to accept is, we are two countries. just because we get friendly doesnt mean subscribing to the view that the partition was unnecessary. my two cents.

extrapolating forum arguments to real life relations isn't all that accurate. observe any university here in america....you will find that, more often than not, indians and pakistanis (both fobs and abcds) get along very well with each other...not just social acquaintances, but usually friends and even roommates in big houses. the ultimate evidence is that India-Pakistan cricket matches are almost always screened by and for both sides, and apart from the expected yelling and trash-talking, there are usually no problems.
i'm sure similar controversial debates must take place between such people...but there are usually no problems. why is that? i think it's because on a forum, there is no obligation of courtesy, and you will always have a couple guys that can rile up even those that would normally be very tolerant in real life and then the cycle continues.
i wouldn't worry too much about good relations/friendship...it is obvious that it is increasing, and more rapidly in neutral settings.

keep it going, discuss all the emotions that cause bad taste. all insecurities. and let’s hope when this thread dies the hatchets are burried here for good and we all emerge as better members, friends and have among us more harmony, postiveness and tolerance accompanied with responsibility in attitudes.

Please!!! I know some Hyderabadi Khan’s, it’s a sin to call Hyderabadi people Urdu speaking, they’ve butchered the language more than Pathan and Punjabi accented Pakistanis. :yukh:

True, only a sad git with no life would take GS or any online message board seriously.
Wesay I use to be the “Ishwar Allah Tero Naam” type person but the attitude of Indians online and their two faced ways in real life has opnened my eyes, all this friendship stuff only works in theory, in real life both our people hate each other and more often than not on message boards it’s Pakistan and Islam which are at the recieving end, it’s the only safe avenue for the poor Indians to vent their frustrations.

Homer, that is why I am losing interest in GS. I have work to do, I am not bekar and I don't want to get into constant flaming and re-flaming that goes on in GS.

I am not an urdu expert, but I have to agree with you. dekkani urdu is so completely telugu and marathified, it can hardly be called urdu. Sure there are Hyderabadies who speak impeccable urdu but at home they switch to dekkani.
