well, it can exist in certain situation.
well when i was in love with someone special, apart from her every other girl was platonic to me, i use to have many female friends during my studies... and it was truly platonic and successful friendship that still exists.
but when not in love or committed, some platonic ones were hard to keep as platonic and turned to really non platonic, mostly ended in pain and some in failure due to in compatibility. and i end up loosing them as friends :(
