buying cars

Re: buying cars

I agree, people have different preferences on what they like and what they dont like regardless of all the marketing and product image etc. similarly comfort varies on height, weights

e.g. I found my wife's old montero more comfortable to drive than her mdx. even though she likes mdx much much better and that is considered a significantly better vehicle. I mean the mdx is comfy handles better, rides better and all, but I just liked the montero more comfortable.

anyways for your car think of what you needs are, you will be able to figure out more between the type i.e. a two seater conv, versus a sedan, versus suv etc. then you can start figuring out based on price and features which fall in your budget, nd then go test drive them...try test driving the shortlisted vehicles the same day. take notes.

go test driving again if not sure.

Re: buying cars

Desis shud step out of the age old mentality of owning Toyotas & Hondas...the only car that really matters is something that u feel comfortable & groovy in.

I have always loved the ride of a Mercedes over a BM & other luxury cars in the same segment. I love to Xperiment with different cars, & my mood changes on weekends. I would love to be in GMC Sierra 3500 on a weekend bash in the mountains, with a tent in the back, & a couple of friends. Just me, my car & nature. A typical desi would come down to only one choice when off roading...Land cruiser...chances are he would never take it off road even.

Just a couple of days back, my cousin bought an Alpha H1, & it has to be the mother of all 4WDs. It is a different category, a different world, a different car, & it is so good at it. Now that is something I would even go to my office in.

If its luxury & comfort you are looking for, & if you dont worry about resale, & you still want to stick with Japanese, then Infiniti...all the way, especially the new G37. Now that is one sweet ride. If only they made convertibles.

Re: buying cars

I don't agree with those ratings based on personal experience. Jaguar, Mercedes are both overrated by JD Power, while BMW and Volvo have been underrated.

Re: buying cars

^

I fully agree. I have been several shaadis/get togthers where the parking lots are full of toyotas and hondas.

Alpha H1 is wikid though.

Re: buying cars

JD power surveys are also based on personal experience of many car owners.
In general JF power is pretty on the mark.

the actual data on repair costs or problems/1000 vehicles are another good data point.

Re: buying cars

well i checked out the website...an it is a really good site...they give links to other sites too...i have looked at edmunds.com and i am going to go to barnes and nobles to check out consumer reports.

i like mercedes also but it is costly to maintain and to buy...

Re: buying cars

LOL nothing to do with desi mentality. Honda and Toyota has build a reputation over 50 years to be more reliable and economical than other builders. Toyota has the LEAST amount of problem initially and least amount of recalls (not considering 2006 and 2007 stats cuz they are incomplete) and least problems ...

If you don't beleive in stats, Talk to your mechanic. Just because you had good experience of new cars of GM doesn't mean anything.

I strongly recommend stick with Japenese car makers. Toyota (who also own lexus as higher brand) or Honda (who own Acura as a higher brand).
Which one? you HAVE TO test drive to see what fits your needs better. Trust me, that will narrow down your choices tremendously.

Re: buying cars

you want to buy a reliable car and cost effective => buy japanese

you want to buy reliable car with very good quality a => buy European (BMW, VW, Merc, Volvo, Saab) dont buy jaguar(not very reliable)

you want to buy muscle 4x4 = Buy new toyotas and nissan 4x4 and american lot

you want to buy sports car => buy again European (porche, ferrari, lambo, BMW M3, M5, Mrec CL)

Re: buying cars

actually in jdpowers 2007 study overall ratings. jaguar and merc ares ranked 4 stars outr of 5, audi 3, bmw 3, saab 3, volvo 3 and volkswagen and landrover 2,

lexus is 5 , infinti is 4 and acura is 3

from a long term mechanical reliability and hassle perspective I think european cars are not as reliable as some peopel think, a few years ago even mercedes had huge quality issues.

saab is very hit or miss

Re: buying cars

Hey Fraudia, I should show your ratings to my father...I want to buy a jaguar and he just gave me 101 reasons to prove that I'm crazy!!! Wonder why most guys have this penchant for japenese cars??

Re: buying cars

not all are,
I have used 2 french pugeots , both gave me hard time and exepsive repairs of electrics.

on the other hand, I found my last BMW 318 (I used for good 6 years) and got a new one now a 330CI extermely reliable with no extra problem. i also found these one far better quality than french and japanese ones.(baring new accord thats exception)

prior to that I have used 3 toyota, 1 honda, 1 nissan, and hyundai in Pakistan. nissan was big mistake. and hyundai was a disaster. toyota and honda proved their metal.

this my personal ownership experience.

Re: buying cars

She claims that I cheated, I never showed her the RAV4 when she was looking for a new Car. Although she is the one who did all the research, I am the one who gets the blame.

There are two reasons why she is thinking for switching;
1) Our driveway is over 500 feet long and it is up a hill. During winter, it can be bit tricky to drive up when there is snow or ice. She feels that we need a 4x4 that is good on gas as well.
2) She wants to have a second child and wants more room. I don't think that RAV4 is any bigger, it might even be smaller than Camry. She may have to look at highlander or something with 3 row of seats.

Re: buying cars

i am still confused……i know driving it makes a difference..but price wise what has good feedback that has quality and reasonable price???

Re: buying cars

what is the difference between v4 and v6 on honda accords????

Re: buying cars

I am basing my views on JD powers and not my own experiences.

Re: buying cars

v4- less power, more fuel efficient
v6- more power- higher fuel consumption

aside from that theere are bells and whistles in v6 models because the premium models are v6.

Re: buying cars

which one is a better buy for the long run? Cuz my husband said the engine for v6 is better buy for long run....but i don't know much about it so i wanted to further find out.

Where can i find the dealer price for cars at??? Besides consumer reports cuz u have to pay for it....

Re: buying cars

i would say v6 over 4 cyliner but its more for performance not sure if it has a real impact on longevity.

for more info try edmunds.com
