re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
I believe in second chances :). Also I think we should attack the root cause, and go all the way to the top. I just feel these guys are the fall guys. (I know, I am not being logical - I just hate the thought of cricketeers spending a long time in jail for a non-violent crime)
I agree that the bookies and the system needs to be demolished. Mazhar should be punished with jail too.
But that doesnt mean these three (or others) should get away with any light punishment. They have cheated the system continuously and then lied about it continuously.
Second chance? We arent executing them or putting them in jail forever, they will get a second chance. But before the second chance there needs to be apt punishment. And a light sentence will not be an apt punishment.

re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
They cheated.
They betrayed their country, the national colors and the millions of fans around the world.
They made more money as international cricketers than even people who are Financial Accountants, Managers etc make in Pakistan - yet they still were more greedy and sold their country down the drain
After being caught in the act, they spent the last year smiling and talking lies on talk shows and in the press every single day - arrogantly thinking this was a Pakistani court where they would get away with it.
So - no I dont have any sympathy for any of them, even Amir. ALL of them should go to jail - yes their careers are over but that is not enough. They all need to spend time behind bars.
As for those who are comparing them with Cronje etc - if anything these 3 should be punished even more than he was as they were not naieve and stupid - they were all fully warned and knew what they were doing was illegal.
At the end of the day, their fate should not be different than any other CONVICTED CRIMINAL - which is what they all are now. They shouldnt get special treatment because they were international cricketers from our country - the hell with them all.
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
I only have some sympathy for muhammad amir, though he should have known better. As for the rest like captain butt, I would even more harsh towards them and throw them in gitmo or equivalent of that in cricket.
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
It takes courge to apologize. I feel bad for players. I understand they were wrong. they should be punished but standards should be same for all. Gibbs was banned for 6 months. Cronje for Life. Mark waugh was fined 8000 A$ and Warne 10,000 A$. no one ended up in jail. Most of them are living their lives happily.
Fully agreed. can someone, anyone provide an example of when any player of any sport was sent to jail even for a day for match fixing?
In the NBA, a referee was caught for cheating - not sure if he spent any time in jail.
If we hold the players to such standards that we are literally asking for their blood (7 years), are we holding others to the same standard? If we do, I think more than 30% of the sub-continent should be behind bars. some examples:
How many businessmen cheat on their taxes in India/Pakistan?
How many times does an average Ind-Pak person call in sick when he is actually healthy
How many of you log into GS during work
do you ever drive above the speed limit
Do you pretend to work while listening to the commentary
If you telecoommute, do you work diligently or do you cut corners
How well do you pay your house help - do they get a living wage or do they work at less than minimum wage
Cricket is still a game. Maybe we are inesting too much emotion into it - and get unduly agitated when things like this happen.
I highly doubt if an Aussie or English or South African or NZ player was involved, there will be this much tamasha and this kind of severity of treatment.
Sincere apologies to all who feel differently.
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
^ I agree with you Southie, 'behind bars' is stretching it, lifetime cricket ban for Asif and Salman while 6-8 years ban for Amir as well as asset seize should've been good enough IMO. Plus, they should've been asked to conduct classes under supervision instructing junior cricketers about moral/ethics of the game etc.

You cannot compare faking being sick or procrastinating at work with fixing

I forgot to include the most indulged in corruption actvity - bribery. Under the table is (almost) a given for most activity in our motherland. Shall we start by putting behind bars anyone who has ever given a bribe or received one? would you say that is a serious offence?
Just tax evasion and bribery - should be enough to put 30% of middle and upper class behind bars, dont you think? Evading taxes in a country with 80% under the poverty line - especialy when one is a billionaire - surely that must rank higher in terms of severity.
I am taken aback at the thirst for unprecedented severity of punishment. This definitely is not the first time sportsmen have engaged in such activity.
Let us use the player's best asset - their kknowledge of the game - to make them give back to their country by providing coaching, mentoring kids, use the fines to help under-priviliged etc. In most parts of Europe, jail is a last resort (dnt know about UK). It is too bad the rest of the world is catching up with my country of residence in terms of locking people away - good for the prison industry I guess.
Again, I cannot logically defend my position 100%. Little amount of compassion, folks.
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
I don't care if they hang all three of them. They have cheated their country. No sympathy for them.

Going by this the Trees in Pakistan won't suffice for the number of PPL who have cheated this nation (Start with Sherwani, wardi wearing , sporting a beard and the list goes on)
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
Majeed gets 2 Years and 8 Months
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
Moreover, just by punishing these players won't solve anything. There has to be through investigation regarding this matter. They need to go after the big players.
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
Asif gets 1 Year
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
Amir for 6 months
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
Amir gets 6 months
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
Salman Butt Jailed for 30 Months
M Asif Jailed for 1 Year
Mazhar Majeed 2.8 Years
M Amir Jailed for 6 Months
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
I was mainly concerned about Aamir. 6 months isn't too bad.
Now look at the bright side, When these convicts come back from jail, They can play American Football and make much more money than cricket. You guys know how good Cons are in football. Remember "The longest yard".
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
But all the sentences will be halved and players will be released on parole if they behave good.
re: BUTT, ASIF AND AAMIR JAILED
I hope Icc will lift amir's ban once " he does his time" in jail. That's how it works in western societies. The British chumps would've never gone to a Pakistani court if the situation was reversed
