The commander in chief stunned the soldiers in Iraq with a surprise visit and shared the thanksgiving meal with them.
Airforce One flew into Iraqi airsapce with lights off, windows down, tarmac lights off etc. Very low key.
One British Airways flight was reported to have seen the Airforce One and made radio contact asking if it was an Airforce One. The crew on Airforce One quickly brushed them off.
Do you this its a political game that he is playing or did he really want to show moral support to the soldiers thousands of miles away from their family.

It's combination of both. Obviously, being a politician, he wants to act in a way that will appeal to the electorate in the USA. But in addition, the US Army does have a morale problem in Iraq, and by going there in person Bush sends out the message to the US troops inflicting the Occupation that the White House has not forgotten them, and appreciates them.

Very true! He didn't even care to meet with all of the stooges...errr... I mean Iraqi Governing Council.... he only met some individuals from amongst them.
I agree that this was both a political and a morale move. I have several friends here who have sons, boyfriends, or husbands in Iraq at this time. As an American, I would like to share what the Americans who are actually in Iraq are writing home - - - -
Many write home about how horrible they feel for the general population of the country. One man who is only 18 years old wrote to his Mum and told her how lucky his friends were to be home and not have to go through the grief that Bush is putting everyone through. Shortly after this letter came home, Mrs. Johnson was notified that Matthew was coming home. He lost both of his hands in an "accident" in Tikrit.
A close girl friend of mine recently had a baby - her husband was allowed to come home for ten days after being there for five months. She recently was contacted by the US Army. Her husband was supposed to come home for good in April 2004. Since the Army allowed him to see the birth of his daughter, they are going to keep Tim for an extra five months - she is not allowed to tell him. They will tell him in APRIL!
I realize that there is a lot of deserved anger towards the American occupation of Iraq. I simply wanted to share a more personal side of the American soldiers who are there - not all by choice.
anahndi, thanks for sharing that. I have heard such letters on radio, read them on internet, govt is doing its best to keep such thing out of public display so they don't get to know the feeling of their troops. recently there was a publicity campaign by military they wrote letters and asked their troops to sign them and then sent to several newspapers to show "how happy and proud they are to be in Iraq" .
The cynic in me says that it’s amazing that a guy who dodged his way out of being drafted into the Vietnam war, has the gall to go to Iraq to ‘thank’ American soldiers who themselves are in harm’s way to fight a war that Bush has the comfort of watching/directing from his cozy armchair perspective in Washington.
Conveniently, news broke out in the US of Dubby serving Thanksgiving dinner, just as families were getting together for their Thanksgiving dinners in the US. This trip had political propaganda written all over it. Any fool could see that, i think.

Come to think of it, it is rather embarrassing to say that he had to sneak into the country he “freed”. This changes nothing – the economy and the body count in the next 11 months will matter.
Senator Clinton’s visit was more manly, I would have to say.
