Bush ratings show little gain from Saddam capture

Thank God, the majority of the American people can see the real Bush, who may well end up just like his father, who let’s not forget had ratings way higher than GWB’s in 1991? He lost very badly the year after…

Bush ratings show little gain from Saddam capture

The capture of Saddam Hussein had a minimal effect on President George W. Bush’s approval ratings, which are hovering at their lowest levels since he took office in January, 2001, according to a poll. The Harris Poll, conducted before and after the ousted Iraqi leader’s capture on December 13, found only a slight improvement in the president’s ratings, up from 48 percent positive, 51 percent negative, to 50 percent positive, 49 percent negative. They were the worst monthly ratings Harris has reported for the president since the September 11 terrorist attacks of two years ago, and the highest negative ratings since he took office.

The big ratings winners from Saddam’s capture were some of the senior members of Bush’s cabinet. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s positive rating climbed from 47 percent to 57 percent, and Attorney General John Ashcroft’s approval was up from 41 percent to 51 percent. The nationwide poll was conducted by telephone from December 10-13 and then again from December 14-16. The survey covered 993 adults and had a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.

Truly fascinating how polls can come up with such different numbers. This from Reuters today:
** "An ABC News/Washington Post poll showed 60 percent of Americans backed his (BUSH) handling of Iraq, compared to 48 percent in mid-November. " **

Given this rating, I’ve got to agree with Malik when he says: “Thank God, the majority of the American people can see the real Bush.”

More on the ABC Poll which certainly must cause chagrin to some.

“Bush’s overall approval rating stands at 59 percent, but the poll found that a majority of Americans – 51 percent – approved of his handling of the economy. It was the first time he was above 50 percent since late April.”
“On the subject of Iraq, 60 percent of the respondents in the poll out on Monday said they approved of how Bush was handling the situation, compared with 48 percent in mid-November. Fifty-nine percent said the war was worth fighting, up six points in a week.
The poll also found that 63 percent thought the war was justified even if the United States did not find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.”
