Another key world power urging Pakistan to carry on with elections.

** Japan hopes for Pakistan’s democratisation**

Updated at Friday, December 28, 2007 1700 PST

TOKYO: Japan voiced hope Friday that Pakistan stays on the course to democracy after opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated while campaigning for next month’s elections. “Japan will make all efforts to continue supporting the country’s democratisation, reconstruction and prosperity,” chief government spokesman Nobutaka Machimura said. “Such a cowardly act of terrorism must be condemned strongly,” Machimura said. “I hope the Pakistani government and people overcome this hardship and firmly pave the way towards democratisation.” Japan is a major donor to Pakistan, a frontline ally in the US-led “war on terror,” despite concerns about the Islamic nation’s nuclear arsenal. Defence Minister Shigeru Ishiba said unrest in Pakistan concerned Japan. “Restoring Pakistan from this confusion will have an extremely significant impact on Japan’s national interests,” Ishiba told reporters.

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

If the elections take place and the Lota League Pml [Q] win through the extensive rigging plans they have in place, the people wont stay quiet, not after what just happened...

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

What some leading western papers are urging.

The stakes are too high for Pakistan to veer off the road to democracy

After Bhutto, Pakistan elections must go ahead

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

Yes, because we all know that if the elections were to go through under normal circumstances, the losing parties will concede defeat with true integrity.

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

So you think Q lota league is truly the ‘number 1’ party in Pakistan? :hehe:

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

It depends. If you choose to dismiss objective methods of verification like election polls than no, they don’t have a very good chance of being the number 1 party in the country.

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

:hehe: This isnt the jokes forum. Should I start posting about Q leagues massive defections, rigging measures, failure of seat sharing negotiations with allied parties? They were in dire straits and even their own leader who at first said he would win 150 seats was down to 70 :hehe: Infact, the rallies were so bad that Elahi himself ordered the state run TV not to show any footage lol! The difference is, without BB’s assasination, they would have been able to carry on by rigging the elections without much resistance from the people, but now the rigging game wont be so simple. There is a reason why their offices are being burnt down by angry mobs throughout Pakistan, as opposed to other parties.

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

Negotiations with other parties? Mass defections? Failure to deliver on promises? Good one. You just described every party in Pakistan.

Look here…you seem to think that I gave a crap about PMLQ or any other party. Fact of the matter is that to me, each and every party is exactly the same. Their all headed by corrupt scums who wouldn’t waste a second in stealing every penny that is available to them. Accountability, integrity, honour etc…these words don’t hold any meaning to them. My issue is with all the people who think that one party or the other is the messiah that we’ve been all waiting for. The problem plaguing our country is these politicians…the sooner we stop giving a crap about them, the better off we’ll be. However, since Pakistanis seem to have a short memory span, every new rendition of Bhutto and Shariff is painted as “champion” of democracy and people. As President Bush tried to say once “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.”

And as I stated before, no matter who loses, they will ALWAYS whine and moan about rigging and fixes. When has that not happened in the history of Pakistan?

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

**People show restrain, every patriotic Pakistan should take part in elections. Its not about Mushi anymore, try to understand the big game. We must elect a leader at this time, otherwise anarchy will continue. I don't care choose Imran or Qazi but elections should be held. **

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

Kyun ab PML Q will win. But I'm happy that PPP is not boycotting. That shows the courage and spirit of a democratic party.

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

‘Benazir’s desire to contest polls should be respected’

NAUDERO: Benazir Bhutto’s husband Asif Zardari said on Saturday that Benazir’s desire to contest the election to rid the country of dictatorship should be honoured. He was talking to leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and other component parties of the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD) and the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) here at Bhutto house, Online reported. However, he said the final decision to take part in the elections would be taken in the PPP meeting on Sunday (today). The informal meeting was attended by Makhdoom Amin Fahim and Yousaf Raza Gillani, the PML-N’s Nawaz Sharif, Raja Zafarul Haq, Makhdoom Javed Hashmi and Khawaja Asif, the APDM’s Mehmood Khan Achakzai and the ANP’s Ghulam Ahmad Bilur. Addressing Nawaz Sharif, Zardari said the decision to participate in the elections should be unanimous. Nawaz agreed.

Benazir’s note: In an interview to BBC radio on Saturday, Zardari said Benazir had left instructions about the future of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) to be read in the event of her death, which would be made public on Sunday, AFP reported. Zardari said that their son would read out the message from Benazir. He also revealed that his wife had made detailed plans for her burial, including changing the location of the plot from his family’s ancestral tomb to her family’s mausoleum following another recent suicide bomb attack. “She has left a message for the party and she has left a will, so we shall be doing that tomorrow (Sunday) in a meeting,” he said. Asked if he would succeed her as party leader, Zardari said: “It depends on the party and depends on the (Benazir’s) will.”

No emotional decision: Meanwhile, PPP leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim told BBC Urdu that the central executive committee of the party would not take a decision about participation in the January 8 elections emotionally or in haste, Online reported. “We will take a decision after a sincere and lengthy deliberation,” he said. He said the PPP’s senior leadership would review the government’s offer that the investigation into Benazir Bhutto’s assassination could be carried out with any nominated judge of the party. agencies

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

PPP has said it will take part in the elections, and asked Nawaz to reverse his decision. Once again Nawaz made to look a fool.

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

Good decision about the continuation of democratic Process. NS is history - he can carryon flip-flopping.

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

I would have considered it a democratic party had the party picked its leadership, and not followed the inheritance will of BB.

what a farce

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

^ a farce If ppp supporters would have denounced such action. No one is disagreeing and those who want to see PPP split will cry on any mole hill.

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

sorry, that line of reasoning does not work.
I have no interest in seeing PPP disintegrate,
the proper thign would have been to go for leadership within the party, people relevant to Pakistan's politics, people liek aitezaz ahsan.

but picking a hated crook like zardari and a kid with zero experience is a farce.

pretty large mole hill eh?

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

Sir, the party is in safe hands and yet the main brains are Aitezaz and co. So dont jump to conclusions too early. Abhi wait karo... :)

Re: Bush Administration Pushing Elections in Pakistan Following Bhutto Assassination.

Nawaz Sharif has become a joke. Zardari today referred to Nawaz like a father speaking to a child.
