Britain did'nt they used to call it great at one time.
Its now a case of follow the dog tail of America into bombing and occupying nations!
It was Iraqi police officers who opened fire. This lack of fire control is not unheard of in 3rd world countries.
The link says British troops also fired with tanks as back up!

Tensions are certainly rising in the Shia south of Iraq, and Grand Ayatollah Sistani has just issued a warning to the US that there will be violence if they don't allow free elections withing months.
The British command said that they(the crowd) were throwing stones and one of those stones "could be" a grenade.
Pre-emptive is the key word here.

With the Shia Muslims now on the rise, and showing their strength the British will be the first to bear the backlash.
