Re: Breastfeeding Do's and Don't's
OH that's a good idea! I guess I can write a birth plan where I can specifically say I want to feed the baby myself.
Re: Breastfeeding Do's and Don't's
When are you due Reha?
Breastfeeding Do’s and Don’t’s
No need to write a birth plan. It’s usually in your file from your OB if you plan to exclusively breastfeed your baby. And they also confirm that with you when you are in labor. If you have a natural birth, I believe they give you the baby after an hour once he is assessed for APGAR and you both are cleaned up.
As for increasing supply it’s a matter of supply and demand as someone else mentioned. I did not do anything extra. However I did eat oatmeal during the first three months when your supply is being established. Oatmeal is a really great way to boost your supply. Plus it’s healthy and super convenient.
Oh here’s a great recipe for ‘lactation cookies’ I’ve never tried it but heard good things about it.
Everyone has given great tips already but I would like to emphasize the importance of taking care of yourself! Breastfeeding can be very draining if you are not eating a proper diet. Please don’t skip meals, eat lots of fruits and vegetables and take your prenatals religiously! I got too busy and neglected my health last month and ended up with shingles, a disease that usually affects ppl with very low immunity! So please don’t neglect yourself or it will catch up to you.
Lastly most first time moms have a hard time in the beginning with the latch so do consult a lactation consultant. I think every woman needs a lactation consultant with their first baby because they are so helpful and know exactly what to do. Don’t rely on the nurses coz as helpful as they may seem to be, they often don’t know much about breastfeeding. My hospital provided a lactation consultant both times and I believe most hospitals do provide one if you ask for one. So basically they’ll come to your hospital room and show you exactly how to breastfeed. They’ll also keep checking up on you.
Did you register your baby at a pediatric practice yet? They also have lactation consultants in their office. At my pediatrician’s office, you have to go see the lactation consultant within 5 days of giving birth so she can guide you and check the baby for weight gain.
I’m sure if you want to breastfeed it will work out for you iA but if there are a few hiccups go easy on yourself and don’t panic! Don’t forget to enjoy your baby no matter how he or she is fed!
Re: Breastfeeding Do’s and Don’t’s
The same thing happened to me! I ebf’d my firstborn 14 months mA, then went immediately into the second round of IVF, conceived the twins…had a heck of time with there preemie births & NICU stays…I was also exclusively breastfeeding the twins and continuously pumping for their feeding tubes…continued nursing them without any supplementation all while also looking after a toddler and when the twins were 5.5 months it all caught up to me and I came down with shingles…worst thing was it broke out along my csection scar…ouch! My OB said my immunity was shot to smithereens, I was so worn out. I weaned the twins off of breastmilk at that point and went to formula.
I also cannot stress enough what cherry is saying, please, please, please take care of yourself and your diet…the housework and cooking and everything else can wait. Concentrate on yourself and the baby.
Re: Breastfeeding Do's and Don't's
Don't introduce bottle early on as that can mess with your supply. You can introduce it after 4-6 weeks to avoid nipple confusion. I haven't pumped much as I am kinda on my own and didn't want the extra hassle but I wish I has introduced the bottle just so I could go out once in a while.
You can get pre sterilised breast milk bags and store milk in them. Frozen breast milk keeps for 6 months.
I wouldn't wait that long, from what I've heard it's very hard to introduce the bottle after the first few weeks. Personally, I introduced the bottle alongside BF right away and alhamdulillah, no problems of any sort.
Re: Breastfeeding Do’s and Don’t’s
From all I was told babies prefer bottle if you introduce it from the start
as it is easier and it complicates with the latch.
Re: Breastfeeding Do's and Don't's
^I have heard that too but that's mainly said to be due to different sucking techniques, however I've never seen that happening around me and I have seen a great number of babies being bfed and bottle-fed at the same without any problems, apart from the initial hassle everyone goes through. However on the other hand, I've seen quite a few mothers struggling with introducing the bottle later on hence why my preference is always to start early with it if you need it. It only makes the life easier for the mom, IMO. Plus 1 (maybe 2) feed a day are hardly going to affect the latch or supply (in case you bottlefeed with formula as I chose to).

Agh Khatti shingles hurt so much! And your outbreak was along the Csection scar...yikes! My story is so similar to yours. As soon as I weaned off my older one I got pregnant with my second so my body didn't get a break. But I didn't have twins so I'm sure it was
even harder for you!
I hope these kids appreciate us when they grow up!

That's interesting! I have never heard of this one before...will try it out too.

not related to breastfeeding but an interesting thing I learned recently is that if you have kids less than 18 months apart, there is an increased risk of pre-term birth, low birth weight and small size for gestational age.
Breastfeeding Do's and Don't's
^ My kids aren't 18 months apart. They are two years apart. I breastfed my first for 15 months.
Re: Breastfeeding Do’s and Don’t’s
yea … new to me too!
did some quick searches and found multiple references (even recipes for its use) to it … esp in relation to ayurvedic medicine.
I think we’ve all probably heard/read that you can test positive for narcotics (since poppy seeds=opium) on a drug test … my first thought/question was … how much of this will get excreted into milk and its effects on mama and esp baby.
From wht i’ve read … it seems poppy seeds ingested in reasonable quantities will help relax the mom, increase supply without leaving the baby drugged ![]()

I lovvvvvvvvvvve khush khush the way my mom makes it for breakfast in the morning sometimes. I think I’ll be asking her to make it for me when I am staying over at her place after delivery.
So far, this is my list:
Poppy seeds
Fennel seeds
Fenugreek seeds
Oatmeal
Re: Breastfeeding Do's and Don't's
Someone told me that the first feed (within 20 minutes or so of birth) should be from the mother and not the formula (Enfamil is what my hospital uses) they usually have at the hospital. Is this true?
yes!!!
And if you are planning on exclusively breastfeeding your baby, there is no need for any formula at the hospital at all!

My kids are 18 months apart and I had perfectly normal pregnancies. Both of them were born full term.
Re: Breastfeeding Do’s and Don’t’s
I’m sure many people have kids even less than 18 months apart and have no issues. Nevertheless it is a statistic and an additional risk. No guarantee that it will or won’t happen as such.
