breast feeding or bottle

Re: breast feeding or bottle

Noor would not take a bottle from day one.
The nurses at the hospital tried and tried.....Noor refused anything but breast milk.
I nursed for a week over 2 years. Not easy!!!!
Finally got her onto the bottle after that but it only lasted for about a year and then she gave up on milk altogether.
Still a challenge to get her to drink milk.

Re: breast feeding or bottle

I've heard it's easier for women who breastfeed to lose weight...not sure if there's any truth to it......

Re: breast feeding or bottle

Very true Sara! You burn calories like mad when your body is producing milk! I was back to size 6 about 3 weeks after giving birth each time and I ate like a linebacker. Thats not typical I know - I've got a pretty high metabolism to start with...but still when you're lactating, you burn about 1/3 more calories.

Re: breast feeding or bottle

My sister breast fed until she had to go back to work. After starting her job she alternated as much as possible. Now, its strictly bottle milk.

I did not breastfeed. I do not believe that breastfeeding helps lose weight. It's just a myth.

I was back to my normal size in six weeks. Even no belly fat!

I know others who breastfeed - they have not lost weight, but they actually look the "mama"/ "aunty type"

:halo:…okay.

Some women indeed do not lose weight when breasteeding, but a myth it is not! Lactating women need about 500-600 calories more per day for a total of 2300-2500 calories per day! So indeed, lactating is a calorie-burning activity! Those who do not lose weight either keep their calorie intake about where it should be or consume more calories than they need. I lost weight readily even though I was eating lots so I probably had an intake of about 2100 a day.

Re: breast feeding or bottle

^ very true MO3, its definitely not a myth. When I started breastfeeding, I noticed initially mini contractions like cramping in my tummy, I asked my doctor and she said nursing your baby releases hormones and chemical messengers that help return the uterus to its pre-pregnancy size thus the contractions when the baby suckles (lasts about a week or two), it definitely helps in flattening the tummy.

According to her I would be burning 200 - 300 calories of stored fat each day, and this calorie burn lasts typically for the first 3 months, then it sort of slows down. I lost most of my weight during the first 3 mths, espeically around the tummy, and then it plateaued after that. so it helps in weight loss initially but not a long term solution.

Re: breast feeding or bottle

I tried breastfeeding - I physcially could not. I had to pump and give it to both my daughters. That didn't last very long.

About losing weight - I actually GAINED weight because I was hungry ALL the time so ending up eating so much food. I don't have a very high metabolism.

So with my 2nd baby, I started watching what I ate the day I came home - started walking and low impact exercise and the weight came off. I lost 15 pounds in 8 weeks.

It really depends on you body
