Sir Dig A Lot, you have hardly reached the epiphany you seem to expound ad nauseum in post after post. Please get off your pulpit, you're beginning to sound like a mullah. Muslims are defensive. Christians are defensive. Jews are defensive. You are defensive too. Here's some Albert Camus for you (he wasn't Muslim, mind): "All tolerance stops when my mother is attacked."

It's little inherent in the religion, it's about human nature; we become defensive when we percieve an attack to something we hold dear. Go read Daniel Gilbert's NYT op-ed from earlier this week. A much better analysis than yours.
