Well, we also have to remember that not everything is within our control and while we may be working hard and doing everything we can, there are factors which we cannot control and which may be working against us. Take for example losing your job and not being able to find another job. You may work extremely hard and sacrifice and do everything you can to find another job, but if it’s a recession and the economy is bad and you live in an area that was hit especially hard by the recession, all of that is working against you and decreases your chances of success in spite of your hard work. Many situations in life are like this.
