Re: Birthdays
My parents never celebrated my birthday nor do I celebrate birthdays of my kids.
I can't find any single good reason for celebrating our birthdays.
Re: Birthdays
Many of the kids in our area have birthday parties every year. These are not cake and games parties though, they are at "chefs for kids", "Leapin Lizards" or "Dino Dig", build-a-bear, salons. To have a party for 15 kids runs well over $500. Thats too steep for us. So we've done a party for each boy but we dont do it every year. Special birthdays - like when turning 5 and in kindergarten is a good way to do it I think, then another in their first year of middle school and their first teen birthday. Otherwise, we do cake and gift at home and have a nice dinner out.
Nice

Hareem, thats a bit sad yeah? I mean, the day that each of my boys were born were the happiest days of my life...and more than enough reason to celebrate...even if its just cake with candles to blow out and wish on, a little gift and a "thank you for blessing my life". No need to go overboard with these expensive parties but it IS a special day. IMHO.
Re: Birthdays
We only celebrated it with our immediate family at home and that was it. My parents never even mentioned that our b-days were coming up to other people because they felt it was like asking people for gifts.
I dont ever recall asking for a party or feeling like I was missing out on anything. I was content with my b-day being acknowleged/celebrated by family only...it was enough for me and still is.
Exactly the same here

Re: Birthdays
Funny you asked. Thinking back, my mother had an interesting spin on this thing. She'd celebrate our (me and my siblings) birthdays in a grand manner one year, and will not celebrate it at all the next. Sometimes, we'd skip a couple of years or three years before a big bash. Her thinking was that she didn't want us to expect a big b'day every year and not get used to it! :D
No elaborate b'days in my mid-teens, just a fancy dinner and presents. Since marriage, b'days are usually just an excuse to party and have friends get together for a good time.
My kids are again very unpredictable (guess, the thing runs in the family!). My eldest is very choosy about her friends, so it will usually be a low-key affair with only select few of her friends and likely at home. My son couldn't care less what happens on his b'day but we'd usually put together a small party for him at some place (mini-golf, bowling etc). My youngest always wants the grandest parties and unashamedly asks for expensive gifts from all the guests. She is really funny and cute. After the party she makes a big hooplah over all the gifts she gets, performs an instant fashion show for any dresses that she gets, adds up all the gift cards, personally write thank you notes, wants the pictures uploaded online right away to share with family, and generally has the best time.
