The nurses took hubby and me in to prep me. I changed into the hospital robe and got attached to all the monitors and got my IV. I could hear the baby’s heartbeat regularly. I started having contractions more frequently, probably due to nerves. At some point they let Ammi come in while hubby went out for a little while.

Hubby would be with me during the surgery, but he wasn’t allowed in until after I got the anesthesia. I was having a spinal and was terrified about getting a shot in the spine without anyone else there.

I don’t know what I expected it to be like, but it definitely wasn’t anything I had imagined! Despite the fact that I knew I was having a c-section, I expected to still be in a delivery room and to have that sort of atmosphere. No – I was in an operating room with really bright lights and doctors hustling and bustling and prepping stuff everywhere. I was already really on edge and nervous. This wasn’t helping.

Then they told me to get on a thin board that I guess was the operating table, with two things that stuck out for me to rest my arms on. I sat up for a while. The anesthesiologist was prepping stuff behind me – I knew what he was up to! The assisting doctor introduced himself and started talking to me. I knew he was trying to distract me. There were other doctors and nurses doing stuff, prepping instruments, moving stuff around, etc. One heard where I teach and exclaimed that her fiance had gone to that school – all I could think was, “I can’t get away!” hehe.

Anyway, eventually they told me to bend forward so I could get the spinal injection. It hurt initally, tho it wasn’t terrible. I did have sit like that for a while as they put the anesthesia in. Then I started to feel the numbing sensation. They told me to lie back and have my arms stretched out. They hung a blue thing over me. It was supposed to be a curtain divider to keep me from seeing anything, but it was practically lying on me. I think I was beginning to panic and then the anesthesiologist gave me oxygen – that worked me up even more and I asked him if I could take it out. I think it was just too many sensations. But he turned it down and I tried to keep myself calm.

My OBGYN came in and started prepping. I started feeling pressure at my abdomen. I wasn’t actually sure when they started the surgery, but sometime soon after, my husband was hustled in in all the madness.

I was really out of it by then. Just trying to keep myself from having a panic attack and stay calm. In under 10 minutes, someone cried out “It’s a girl” and I heard the baby cry out. I think I said, “Really?” And that was about it. They took her to get cleaned off and weighed and tested. MashAllah she was a great weight for her age. She scored amazingly well on her APGAR tests and did not need to be sent to the NICU. They called hubby over to take her and he brought her over. He told me she was beautiful. I tried to turn and see her as best as I could. I remember thinking, “Oh look a cute baby,” but it didn’t really hit me that this was mine – it really still hasn’t hit me.

OMG, your story felt like I was reliving what I went through…
Only I was put under general anesthesia and was completely terrified in the operating room. Hubby couldn’t be there with me, and I had the bad luck of a VERY coldhearted nurse/doctor whatever she was. I was being prepped it felt heartless…like she was literally treating me as if I was an animal or something, not sure how to describe. Due to previous pregnancy my skin/belly was very loose and baby was not “stable” so they pushed my pregnant belly as far back as possible and taped me up to hold it so they can easily operate. Now mind you I was supposed to be a planned c-section on 09/14 but started having intense contractions(3-5 mins apart) on 09/10.
I was crying at this point because it hurt so bad!!! And as the anesthesiologist gave me the oxygen mask (it was the anesthesia)…i remember being scaredd & anxious as I fell asleep. Well the pain, people who went through c-sections know the pain you go through. I really should write down my story here and then send it to myself, so I have it for memory…hmm
