Ijtehaad is fine, but there are things that one can try to gauge as to how they apply in the modern day and age, e.g. interest rates and there are things that are quite clear and can not be changed.
she is more than welcome to become a scholar and go about doing ijtehaad in the right way on issues ranging from witnessing rules, to interest to travel without mehram etc. I am all for it.
Agree with it or not, if homosexuality is clearly stated as being disallowed then its disallowed.
Ills that manji talks about from her own life are societal crap which is paraded around as faith by followers of all religions. One would think that she would try to change the societal views and norms so they dont find the excuse of religion to hide behind. But then i suppose that does not generate much press.
