Re: Bigger Bang for Your Buck when Choosing Universities?
Bint e,
My biggest mistake was getting an MBA right out of college at 21 and it wasn’t fun. Given a choice, I would have preferred to have had some experience before jumping into the bandwagon. If you decide to get your MBA, make sure there is enough work exp. I’d also suggest getting your MBA from a better school compared to your B’s just because in my experience everyone focuses on your last degree/school more (I am not sure what the rating for UH or Rice is, but I am presuming Rice to be better).
Someone suggested getting an IT degree instead of BBA and I would whole heartily agree. If you are to follow the SAP path, why not get your degree in IT? So much better scope in my opinion and it will give you an option to learn some other languages/programs. I always consider IT to be safer in terms of job security compared to others:-)
Restaurant businesses are such neat ideas and there is so much to play around in terms of creativity and food. All the best. I am sure the MBA degree would be a great asset to the future business.
Thanks TwitTwit. I do plan on having some job experience along the way while going for the MBA. Another reason for looking into MBA is the restaurant bit. Also I do have 5 1/2 years of work experience but in retail. Started off as a sales associate & worked my way up as a store manager. I know its not comparable to an IT job but with my past experience I am confident that I won't be stepping in the job market all raw. I am a quick learner, know how to communicate even in undesirable circumstances, manage a group & work under stress.
Restaurants are no doubt neat. As long as we don't blindly jump into it. I know there is so much potential in this business provided we don't take the same traditional Desi route. No matter how tough economy is people eat. We just have to tap into the right kind of crowd & offer the best in not just taste but customer service as well.
Re: Bigger Bang for Your Buck when Choosing Universities?
Well, I dont have much knowledge about Uni's but still I would suggest you, if you really want a degree just get it from any uni. even online maybe, try to save money and invest.Degree is a just a label not gonna help you in any way to make money...I quit my studies after A levels, actually never wanted but I had to because of financial difficulties, I really wnated to see uni. life but today when I look back, think and look at my friends who wasted there time in getting degrees from the so callled famous uni's I feel Thankful to Almighty that I never wasted my time.Frankly speaking, real world is complete opposite to what they taught you in theory.I mean the purpose of life is live contently, its not neccesarly about making money, so whats the purpose of wasting time.I mean after getting a degree you gonna work for a company for few thousands, like my freinds do, and I make Alhamdolilah much much more then they can ever earn.
Khair best of luck with whatever you do but I would really suggest you to always think as an employer not as an employee & make contacts, contact means power.
:)
Some strong opinions there Ahmed. Obviously degree won't mean anything if we don't have the will to learn & move forward in life. Its nice to know you are doing good. In order to become a good employer one needs to become an employee first. Its a learning process isn't it. But hey thank you for the wishes. They are much appreciated :)
Re: Bigger Bang for Your Buck when Choosing Universities?
Thanks again. Hubby jee always prays his Jumma at a Masjid. So I am hoping there is one not too far from his work place. We also plan on sending our daughter to an Islamic school. Again too many questions.
Any suggestions on where I should open the housing thread so I can get as much input as possible?
I know I saw that. How exciting is that. I was looking right now & they also offer a Bachelors in Computer Information Systems.
I have a much clear mind compared to when I opened this thread. Thank you thank you thank you people. One of the many reasons I love GS.
If any of you still feel like adding something, please do share.
Re: Bigger Bang for Your Buck when Choosing Universities?
It is a learning process, but being an employee makes your approach towards success limited & I dont agree with people who say you learn by loosing, loosing is an excuse for losers, Have a winning experience.Remember, high risk, high return.Anyways,Its sehr time for me.

dont underestimate your retail experience, think in terms of knowledge and skills..
with first hand retail mgmt experience, computer sic and then an MBA you can be uniquely suited for e-commerce and mobile commerce apps and sites for major retailers and consulting companies. functional experience and knowledge become increasingly critical as your grow in your career than just technical skills.
Re: Bigger Bang for Your Buck when Choosing Universities?
and as far as formal education goes..when needed we try to find the best doctors, lawyers, accountants, architects, mechanics, psychologists, teachers and nurses...lets not knock the value of formal education. I am sure there are people who picked up surgery through books and experiments on dummies...i just dont want one of them operating on myself or a loved one, or sit in a plane designed by someone who did not have formal training in it. There are a few great examples of people who accomplished a lot without formal education...but they are a few examples for a reason
