You probably didn't follow the news on deaths and injuries resulting from the 'kite-flying', if I remember correctly one infant's neck got cut, many kids got their legs broken and what not.
I've heard about it...but I think that's an issue that would be best handled through law enforcement and better management, not canceling the event all together. Basant brought in a ton of revenue...and promoted a better image of Pakistan in general...I think it's unfortunate that they had to get rid of it.
