Re: Barclays gets licence to operate in Pakistan
firstly all these economic experts say that this economy will actully trickle down to benefit the majority of people.
JUST TELL ME YOURSELF, CAN ANYONE ACTULLY EVEN HAVE SUCH A BOOM THAT WILL BENEFIT THE WHOLE POPULATION IN ONE TIME?
its a slow process dude, just look at the positive side, we had a dead economy and declared a failed state and in 1999 we would have never thought that we will be in such a great position we are in today, most people had given up on pakistan,
WE ARE NOW GOING THROUGHT THE RIGHT STAGE, as business have been setup which are provide people with jobs, 10 million of them have been created since mush has arrived, so its not only the rich that is benefiting, cos the rich have expanded by leaps no doubt but there expansion has ment more competition and more employement,
i know people living luxary lifes in dha who had struggling lives in villages 8 years ago. DID YOU KNOW PAKISTANS RICHEST MAN TODAY MALIK RIAZ WAS ABSOLUTLY NOTHING, 8 YEARS AGO. peoples lives have changed and for the good. like i said this boom has benefited everyone apart from those lazy who dnt like to work, musharraf has made business opertunitys, he has brought bank reforms, he has brought the capital to pakistan for people to start business.
today we have farmers who are now entrepreneurs, farming has become an enterprise for them, how can you say farmers have not benefited, thats a joke, come to me and i will take you to my village and show you farmers who have benefited from the boom, i allready gave you an example of how poultry farms have turned there profits by 5 times more.
NOW YOU CAN SEE THAT MUSHARRAF HAS ACTULLY ONLY MADE THE FOUNDATIONS TO A PROPEROUS ECONOMY, WITH TIME THIS WILL ALL TRICKLE DOWN TO EVERYONE.
oppertunitys have allreayd been made, like i said farming has become a lucrative business with banking reforms, as you can see more and more corporates are coming into the banking sector, loans are easily obtained, so capital is available, now all we need is an awareness of entrepreneurship, and mainly rural entrepreneurship.
I'll give you that... But despite you happy stories, I know people who havent benefited at all... I know many who benefited, but they are far outweighed by the have nots.. And the sad truth is that the Have nots simply arent seen or are unheard.
And I question how majority of the people will benefit when there is so much corruption, when peole dont have access to basic facilities etc...
Mush should have done more.. For one, he ignored human resource development.
There were absolutely no Land reforms, which is essential in a country where land distribution is sooo skewed.
Also, there are some deep probs with the economy... Savings is very low, imports have outpaced exports, and the export base hasnt been diversified... These are sissues that Musharaf govt didnt do well with.
The crux of the matter is poor governance and corruption. With power so centralized, a country as large as Pak simply cant be run by one man.
And the bottom line is that there is no rule of law... There are laws, but the govt itself flouts those laws.
The CJ for all his faults, atleast provided oversight and made people follow the rules... Just read about why there was ban on highrises in Lahore.
Without rule of law and good governance, economic growth will never reach the poor.
Musharaf isnt providing good governance. Crime has gone up, corruption is up, ethnic tension is up, provoncial disharmony is still strong, there is a virtual civil war in half the country, and political tension has never been this high...
So for me Mush is a liability. The economy may continue to grow, but its time for Msuharaf to go.
Whats needed is truly democratic govt, that is answerable tothe people, an is beholden to the checks and balances provided for in the constitution... And that means an independant judiciary that is not bias towards any party.
The next govt can continue what Mush startedm but they will have to fix some serious structurral problems. Deal with the inflation and make policies that affect the majority of the polulation and poor friendly.
Re: Barclays gets licence to operate in Pakistan
Great news for Pakistan, and something that all Pakistani’s should applaud. :k:

well like i have said, you cant expect everyone to benefit at once, pakistan is a massive country of 160 million people and we had huge problems in the 80s and 90s. but the process is going on now, slowly it will trickle down.
about all those people who havnt benefited, well like i said they just havnt taken use of the oppertunitys made by musharraf while the ones that have benefited have, look how people have gone from living in cottages to big bunglows in the last few years, 5 years ago, a guy in my village known as a lufunga who failed in all exams had no respect in the village, people use to hate him, but actully he was quite an active guy and had senses in his mind (which he didnt use before), but today he is a big real estate developer making big housing estates in pakistan, now there are plenty of success storys like this,
well everyone is not gona get that big but there are tremendous oppertunitys in rural, like poultry farming, fish farming, livestock etc, which have become lucrative businesses.
the point here is that the oppertunitys have opened up, the business market is now open ready for people to make millions, theres huge demand in pakistan, THATS WHY I SAID WHAT NOW NEEDS TO HAPPEN IS AN PROMOTION OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP, so that we can make an entrepreneurship culture.
this not only helps rural areas and ups productivity in farms but also helps build high tech businesses, like in india we have seen people make millions from IT, there are also many pakistanis who have made it big in IT and are earning millions of dollars today when yestoday they were poor.
and thats the reason why imports are high, because the demand of products has gone up so much and the supply isnt being met.
Re: Barclays gets licence to operate in Pakistan
well kids dont fight over a ego toy.
I dont give a damn who has done or not! Barclays comming to Pak means to me leave idiots in Pakistan aside...
they must have business case to go to noramally a terror link state.
so they must have thought well before going there. the fact they are going there mean they are eying some oppertunities there, so certainly something is looking green to them and something in Pak economy has attracted them economy, govt policies etc.
no business go on any requests unless they dont fore see a possible profit.
people here complaining here oh the tickle down effect hasnt happened.... well first it will take time atleast its something there to tickle down ;), second atleast admit a positive thing happed for pakistan though may not be for masses directly yet. atleast the Pakistan is in better shape economically. it might not perfect but something positive is always better than nothing.

A very balanced post, and my sentiments exactly. Let's all hope that Barclays entry into Pakistan provides more opportunities for Pakistani's, and encourages other foreign banks to come forward as well.

The development of Banking sector in Pakistan has been one of many success stories of President Musharaf and his govt. The finance sector will continue to grow, with foregin investment in business development taking place in all sectors.
