Baking - The Beginners Guide

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

i made my ‘farewell’ cake for my boss. he’s going to the caribbean to do charity work. so i wanted to make a tropical looking cake. i got inspiration from sunset_eyes cakes and decided to use cigarellos around the border, to give it a bamboo effect. Out of all the cakes I have made so far, this one is my favourite.

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

^ I have to say thats the best looking one I've seen so far :)

Are some of the flowers made out of Icing, and are those beads edible? I haven't been able to find beads aorund here yet.

Very prettY :)

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

Mehnaz and sunset eyes…WOW…!!!
Amazing cakes…:k:

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

the flowers and leave are all made out of fondant. i painted it with gold pearl dust for extra effect. the beads are edible sugar. the base of the cake is buttercream. i didn't cover it with fondant.

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

Great work Mehnaz, love those flowers on your cake... very professional.

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

Oh MY MY MY mehnaz! So very well done and to be honest, better than mine. I love it!!! trust me, you are a professional!!! Was it a plain cake with buttercream filling?

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

wow I love baking cakes, but no way could I produce anything as exquisite as that. How did you do it?? Was the icing yourself?? :)

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

Do you guys make fondant at home?

I have not seen anyone using fondant...so where do you get it from?...easily in pakistan...

Btw you guys are really good at baking....it's a visual treat to see your baking images.

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

Very talented :)

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

mehnaz, amazing work girl!!! love it! it fits the tropical theme perfectly!

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

Thanks everybody. :)

This cake took a lot of time to make. I spent 5 hours making flowers on Friday night (until around 1:30 a.m.) .... and of course, I made too many. So I have stored the extra ones for use on future cakes.

I filled it with fresh strawberries and buttecream. I really need to try out some new fruit fillings.

This is AWESOME :k:

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

About a year.

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

I've a question about icing cakes...I was looking on the wilton's website and it listed several different types (royal icing, buttercream, decorators etc). So far i've been using just the prepackaged ones from the grocery store.....are those different than buttercream/royal icing etc?

ALso, what's the best type of icing to use for making flowers and roses...i've seen Royal icing and decorator's icing in the stores....

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

For icing cakes, try their basic buttercream recipe. Its my fallback icing and I make big batches of it in my mixer. I do find their recipe with 8 cups of powdered sugar too sweet though so I usually just keep tasting after each cup and stop when I think its sweet enough.

A few weeks ago I made Oreo Cookie Cupcakes and they were SO good and a huge hit with everyone. The recipe called for a slightly different icing and I think its my new favourite because it was incredibly fluffy and light. I did have to modify it though as I added in too many crushed Oreos but omg, it was SOOO good. Here is the recipe I followed for both cupcakes and icing-
