Baking - The Beginners Guide

Can anyone answer my question too?? paleeze?

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

Sara, the cake looks great!

Wishkamar, you need to follow the recipe exactly. Do not use vegetable oil if it asks you to use butter. That probably is responsible for the dry texture.

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

Oh, OK! Thanks, Mehnaz! I will try the recipe again using cake flour and butter. Hopefully, it will turn out good this time fingers crossed

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

They are made out of round and square pans and then just carved. Sometimes, you make multiple cakes, stick them together and then carve .... it all depends on what you are making. Some of the details are done out of gumpaste and fondant.

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

^ lady, the rainbow cake looks AWESOME!!! well done!!!! :)

sara, good job on the carrot cake, missy! look at you with your alterations and stuff!

wishkamar, yup, like mehnaz said, you gotta follow the recipes exactly as laid out. you can't sub in ingredients like you do in cooking and there's no "andaza" either- they've done all the hardwork for you in the recipe book, just follow it like a good girl :p

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

^ Thanks!

Oh…i had some leftover batter and added more raisins and some crushed pineapple and made cupcakes. Came out pretty decent! :yummy:

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

I need some help. I need to make a farewell cake for my manager's farewell party at work. I'll be making a 10" round cake (or maybe a 12" hexagon cake) but I am clueless as to how to decorate it. I searched online and can't find any 'inspiration'.

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

wow great thread, I will come back to it.

Does he/she have a hobby/likes anything in particular? If its a guy and into sports you could do a basketball/baseball themed cake, no? Same goes for if its a woman, use whatever she is into.

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

^ Thanks Afshi, but those are complicated to make. :hehe:

He’s into jogging and charity work (nice combination, eh?). So I have no clue how to decorate this … maybe something with no theme, just shapes … hmmm …

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

Re: Baking - The Beginners Guide

:e6:

I made this
Healthy Indulgences: black beans

I followed the recipe almost exactly. Greased the pan as I normally do, and baked th cake at 350 F for 30 minutes.
It passed the knife test but when i tried to take it out, it was allllll stuck to the pan and just broke off!

I’m not sure where i went wrong. I used a Wilton’s 6" round pan.
was the baking time/temperature wrong?
Was there something wrong with the recipe?

Otherwise, it tastes like a pretty darn good cake…except its all broken up. Any ideas to salvage this into something normal?

Sara she says to use a 9 inch pan, so how did you manage to use all that batter in a 6 inch? Did you halve the recipe? Anyhow, how long did you let the cake cook? did you also follow her directions on prepping the pan? :

Spray a 9" cake pan with extra virgin olive oil cooking spray, or just grease it with a thin layer of butter. Dust cocoa all over the inside of the pan, tapping to evenly distribute. Cut a round of parchment paper and line the bottom of the pan, then spray the parchment lightly.

these things can make a huge difference for me. I usually have to wait till the cake has completely cooled down, which is a couple of hours. This is what i normally do for my cakes and there hasnt been a problem so far Alhamd.

No I made the entire recipe, just baked the rest of the batter in the pan after the first pan was done. I only filled the pan 2/3 of the way.

I let it bake for 30 minutes. I inserted the knife to see if it was done and it came out clean.

Also, normally I just lightly grease the pan with vegetable oil. I've been doing that from the beginning and its been working fine for me.
