Re: Baking and Cake Decorating
Okay so I made like a mutlple layer of mistakes.
1- my cake layers were too high
2 - to much shortening in the fondant; it didn’t stay put
3- the cake was still warm when I put the icing on.

What!! I can’t be good at everything.
Re: Baking and Cake Decorating

OMG muniya! lol!
i'm sorry, hon, but maybe baking isn't up your alley? :P
on the upside, the fondant does look good but you probably needed more powdered sugar to make it more like soft playdough and not all melty.

the cake itself was good, the fondant was good too; nice and firm like playdough and then the filling custard and strawberries to die for - but put it all together and what a mess!

Re: Baking and Cake Decorating
I have heard A LOT about Michaels cake decorating classes on GS but just wondering, how do these beautiful cakes taste and do you use a recipe for cake toppings/frostings or are they all store bought? Please someone reply to my questions. Thanks!
Re: Baking and Cake Decorating
corruptangel,
the michaels buttercream icing is a bit sweet, but its not as sweet as betty crocker/duncan hines frosting. To make the cakes, I use a store bought mix and make the icing…
I have attached a link to the wilton website… you can find cake recipes as well as icing recipes. In my opinion, if you are interested in cake decorating, take the first course. It’ll give you a basic idea of how to begin icing and you can get a hold of course book 2 and try doing it yourself.

oh before i forget, this applies to you Muniya as well. Sign up for Michaels email list. You’ll get weekly coupons. If the fine print mentions nothing about courses, you can usually use the coupon towards the class. Sometimes they usually discount the courses (40%off as well). Give them a call, and ask them who the instructor of the course is and what time they work (usually are Michaels employee) and go in and speak to them if you have any questions…
Re: Baking and Cake Decorating
^I tried betty crocker and duncan hynes frostings but they really didn't taste good at all. I'll check about basic cake decorating class soon. Thanks
Re: Baking and Cake Decorating
the pre-made frostings are pretty hideous.
make the buttercream recipe off wiltons and if you want, you can add in a bit less sugar. i very rarely use the full amount they've mentioned- just add until you get the consistency you want.
muniya, do you know you can also flavour marshmallow fondant with those little flavouring gels? yum!
Re: Baking and Cake Decorating
