I think that can vary. In our conservative culture if a guy drinks and sleeps around, I think that might be sufficient enough for him to qualify as a ‘bad boy.’
But in a more liberal culture such behaviors are the norm, so you need something more than that. It’s a very confident, don’t-give-a-damn-about-anything persona. One that appears not to care about the approval of others or conform to rules and expectations. There’s a reckless to them and an artful impudence in their manner of responding that can even be funny at times. Since they’re not a khuli-kitaab when it comes to their feelings and thoughts, there is an aura of mystery that surrounds them that can make people curious. If they were thoroughly bad… like bad to the bone…they wouldn’t be appealing at all. Most people are drawn to goodness; it’s in our nature. And the bad boy can be good and kind and even vulnerable; it’s just that he doesn’t display these traits as freely or liberally…as the nice guy.
